Among the teams I have confirmed are still in for MLB Phenom Shohei Ohtani:
Dodgers
Cubs
Blue Jays
Angels
This isn’t an exclusive list, others still remain in. These are just the ones I know are still in the mix.
Sources: Ohtani sweepstakes are moving along and the Texas Rangers and at least one team in the AL East has dropped out. Teams who feel they aren’t real players are beginning to take themselves out of talks.
Jacob DeGrom pitched over 4 innings today, facing 13 batters. He struck out 10 of them. One Mets source said “he looks like Jake”. They expect him back soon.
Source: Francisco Lindor has told Steve Cohen he’d like the team to target Carlos Correa to play Third Base for the club. The team has been in recent discussions and is considered to be a real player for Correa. Giants and Twins among others remain strongly in.

GM Jeff Bridich’s seat is now scorching hot. Facing pressure, Rockies are opening back up talks. Arenado told Rockies to either add for playoffs or trade him, and they did neither.
#Mets
and
#Dodgers
in discussions in addition to current front-runner
#Cardinals
Contrary to what one might believe, the addition of Kodai Senga has become MORE likely tonight after the addition of Brandon Nimmo and David Robertson. Senga has many interested suitors, but Mets have conveyed they are intent on winning now and Senga is their top FA SP target.
Source: The potential FA availability of Manny Machado next year was something the Mets internally discussed near the end of negotiations with Carlos Correa.
According to FanGraphs:
-Mets have
#2
best hitters in baseball
-Mets have
#2
rotation in baseball (not including Kodai Senga)
-Mets have
#3
bullpen in baseball
Put all that together and they are FanGraphs number 1 projected team…not many flaws on this team…very well rounded.
Source:
#Mets
have spoken with the
#Orioles
and expressed “lots of interest” in Trey Mancini and Jorge Lopez. Doubt exists over Lopez’s availability, but Mancini is thought likely to be dealt. Additionally, the Mets believe
#Cubs
David Robertson is an “ideal fit” for the bullpen.
Mets and White Sox see each other as a great fit to make a trade, if they were to decide to go that route. Amongst the names that have been mentioned as possible options in any trade:
-Liam Hendriks
-James McCann
-Mark Vientos
Source: Steve Cohen has told Billy Eppler that he wants Buck Showalter as
#Mets
manager. He has given Billy the ability to conduct his own search, but Billy is aware of his preference. Additionally, “At least 1 big name Mets player wants Buck and is vocal about it”.
Don’t look now, but the Mets are only 1 game back for the title of “Best Team in NY”.
The Yankees are 70-38
The Mets are 69-39
Tighten up your seatbelt, both teams are on pace for over 100 wins, something that wasn’t even done in 2000 when they faced off in the World Series.
Sources tells me and
@Ragazzoreport
the Mets are one of several teams that have an offer out to the Nationals for Josh Bell. There’s would send a SP and OF in the upper minor leagues to Washington. If accepted, the Mets would also acquire a major league reliever in this deal.
Source:
#Mets
exploring other options as they feel they are no longer major players in the Josh Bell sweepstakes (some believe Houston may ultimately end up with him). Two players they’re showing strong recent interest in: Cubs Willson Contreras and David Robertson.
Source: The Cardinals have expressed a lot of early interest in Juan Soto. It’s no sure thing that Soto is traded, but with many teams showing interest, St. Louis could be one to watch.
Source: The
#Mets
are expected to go hard after Yusei Kikuchi once the lockout concludes. They showed interest right before the lockout and that is expected to continue after the lockout.
Sources: Multiple rival clubs expect the Mets to entertain the idea of trading star 1B Pete Alonso after this season. Alonso is a free agent after the 2024 season and belief is as of right now, they aren’t close regarding a potential extension to keep him in New York.
Could the
#Mets
decide to not bring Nimmo back and instead target Trea Turner?
C: Alvarez/Nido
1B: Pete
2B: Trea
SS: Lindor
3B: Esco/Baty
LF: Canha
CF: Marte
RF: McNeil
Would you like this change?
Sources involved in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes tell me that an aspect of finality has been felt in recent hours and days. Feels like we are finally coming up on the big decision, and it’s only a matter of time until we find out where he may be headed.
The Mets are winning games. Lindor has a sub .500 OPS. Nimmo has a .700 OPS. Alvarez is in a bad slump. Senga is playing catch. J.D. Martinez is barely swinging the bat. Scott is not on the major league team. They might be here to stay.
Source:
#Mets
maintain strong interest in
#Cubs
Willson Contreras and David Robertson, but feel Willson’s cost to acquire is “unreasonable” at the moment. Their main focus is “very clearly Trey Mancini” at this point.
Sources: The Mets and Diamondbacks are 2 teams expected to have strong interest in Japanese SP Yoshinobu Yamamato should he be posted after the season. Many more expected to be in with a contract exceeding $200 million a strong possibility.
Thought around baseball is the lack of noise from Correa/Mets negotiations might not be a bad thing. Many suggest that sides have taken stance of avoiding leaks considering mutual motivation to close a deal with desire to avoid getting one another in trouble (as Steve has before)
The Mets had concerns about both Kumar Rocker and Jacob DeGrom’s physicals. The Rangers took a risk aggressively going after both and 2 years later they have both undergone Tommy John, a very tough break for Texas. Wishing a speedy recovery to both.
Phones are ringing today around baseball. Expectation is today likely is the most active day to date and the weekend is only a continuation of that. Prepare for potential Baseball Trade Deadline CHAOS.
Mets blueprint should look a lot like O’s trade deadline last year. Ship the rentals, keep the meaningful long term players, promote young talent from within and try it all again in the offseason. Start fresh.
Mets getting high praise from several league evaluators I’ve spoken with for their Eduardo Escobar trade. All of them echoing the same sentiment…why would the Angels give Crow up in that deal?
Sources: There has been a huge shakeup in the Mets front office. Kevin Howard, director of player development has been fired as well as Jeff Lebow, Director of Pro Player Evaluation. Other higher ranking officials and analysts said to be fired as well. Changes coming to Mets org.
Sources: The Mets have fired director of player development Kevin Howard.
Howard was also the Mets assistant hitting coach for part of the 2021 season.
Sources: Executives with the Mets and around the league are unsure about Buck Showalter’s intentions to manage next season, with some under the impression he has contemplated stepping down as manager. Big decisions ahead for Buck and the Mets heading into next season.
Talking to people around the league about the prospects the Mets received in their sell off. Luisangel Acuna and Drew Gilbert seen as high level prospects, but the ones most are excited about are actually Ryan Clifford and Marco Vargas. Clifford specifically seen as a HUGE get.
Source: As part of Mets offer, Correa would have to take a annual physical which would guarantee the following year if passed. So 6/157.5 was conditional on him passing every annual physical.
“My team is good. But it isn’t that much better than last year,” he (Steve Cohen) said. “If you want a team that’s good, this is what it costs. What are you going to do?”
-NY Post
The trades of JV and Max have made the spotlight on Kodai Senga even bigger and man has he ran with it. Senga with 7 IP, 1 ER and 12 K contributing to his 3.08 ERA, 3rd in the NL. What an addition he’s been for the Mets.
To summarize what’s going on in Anaheim:
Arte Moreno has now destroyed multiple Angels teams, then proceeded to tease fans that he is selling the club. He then decided ultimately he’d like to hold on to this team and not sell, and then destroy this one.
Memo to MLB fans. Your team probably wants Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The problem is your friends team also wants Yoshinobu Yamamoto. It’s craziness behind the scenes for him, and the $ might be absolutely absurd. Might be closer to $300M than it is to $200M.
Francisco Lindor is objectively one of the leagues MOST unlucky hitters so far in 2024.

Sources: Mets have identified Jordan Montgomery as a pitcher they really like. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is someone they are also very interested in, but far more teams are interested in him which could make it more difficult to acquire him. Both pitchers on Mets wishlist.
Source: Multiple clubs believe that the
#RedSox
are indecisive as to how they want to proceed this offseason, and have contemplated selling. Additionally, the
#Dodgers
are expected to be less aggressive this year than years past, with Castillo possible off the table.
Adam Ottavino turned down his 1 year, 6.75M option weeks ago. Today he signed with the Mets for 4.5M over 1 year. Clearly a questionable decision for Ottavino, but I’m sure the Mets are happy they got him back at a nice discount.
Around baseball, there is a growing expectation that an agreement will be had by the end of this week. One source put it this way to me about a deal today “50/50 chance a deal is struck today, but if I had to guess, we leave today with a deal.” As we know, progress can plateau..
What the Angels did this season is arguably the biggest organizational failure in MLB history. The moves they have made will set them back potentially an entire decade. This is the type of shit you’d see in a documentary.
I’m hearing Mets are now heavily leaning towards selling. Focus obviously on rentals…Pham/Robertson/Canha. As of right now, Mets front office has deemed it “unlikely” that Justin Verlander OR Max Scherzer are dealt unless they are blown away. Getting calls on all of them now.
Benjamin Allbright (
@AllbrightNFL
) on DeAndre Hopkins suitors:
“Teams I’m told are interested with the possible capital to pull off a trade for Hopkins include (but aren’t limited to) the New England Patriots, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.”
Breaking:
@BNightengale
reporting in his article that Mets informed Justin Verlander they might not be contending again until 2025. A huge development, and one that begs the question…are they going to keep Pete after this season?
Sources: Mets deal with Raymel Ortiz, the
#26
player in the 2024 international prospect class according to
@MLBPipeline
, fell through because of player age falsification.
Trade Scherzer back to the Dodgers, pay his whole contract and get back one of their 5+ elite young SP prospects and then sign Nola to a contract for the rest of his life.
Mets gained permission to talk to David Stearns on August 1st. What else happened on August 1st?
The Mets traded Justin Verlander to the Astros.
Is it possible they asked him how he felt about it all knowing they’d pursue him for the following seasons?
I’m hearing the Mets have explored the idea of solving the DH problem with a new LHB and RHB platoon. Mets higher-ups have not been pleased with Dom Smith and J.D. Davis platooning and the expectation is Dom Smith is likely dealt, with a J.D. Davis trade in consideration as well.
Mets firings are very targeted and very telling. Directors of departments that target Development and Pro Player Evaluation, 2 areas they’ve struggled with immensely. Analytics department looking at a re-tool as well.
Big news regarding the outfielder market: The Rays are shopping OF Randy Arozarena, and there’s a good chance that he is moved, sources tell
@MLBNerds
.
Source: Mets remain optimistic a deal with Carlos Correa can be reached. Conversations continue to take place as both sides try to find common ground following the flagged physical.
If deal was to go through and both Acuna and Saggesse were included, what a steal it would be for Mets:
-Between 15-30M going to TEX
-Top 50 prospect (Acuna’s brother) and highly performing AA bat in top 15 of TEX system in return
Ownership flying to Japan for a free agent is a HUGE deal. It’s the biggest way a team could show interest. One thing is clear in all of this…the Mets REALLY want Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The bigger question is does he want them.
Source: Tyler Naquin move doesn’t take
#Mets
out of pursuit for another bat. They will continue to explore all options ranging from Trey Mancini to J.D. Martinez.
Sounds like Mets do have a budget they have to work under. With that being said, the budget looks to be pretty high compared to the rest of baseball. Speculation here, I wonder if Mets try to pry Corbin Burnes away from MIL to give them flexibility to add other pieces.
Jon Heyman is now reporting that Steve Cohen’s initial offer was “close to $300 million…13-year deal he seemed to favor”, but Boras told him they were “already down the road”. Cohen says “we would have gotten a good ballplayer, and it would have given us a great ball team”.
Source: Francisco Lindor has told Steve Cohen he’d like the team to target Carlos Correa to play Third Base for the club. The team has been in recent discussions and is considered to be a real player for Correa. Giants and Twins among others remain strongly in.
Spoke to one source who clarified Mets stance on adding talent this offseason. Mets will be as aggressive as they can to get high-end talent if the value is there. That means Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto would be in play if they deem their value exceeds their cost to acquire.
A new era of Mets baseball is upon us. David Stearns. New manager. Belief is expectations going into next season will not be as big as they were coming into this season, but they WILL be in play for big names like Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto. Only time can tell what they do.
New from
@JonHeyman
:
The Mets appear ready to give Brett Baty or Ronnie Mauricio a chance to win the third base job and don’t seem involved for Chapman.
While Mets negotiated with Max Scherzer over a year ago, they made it clear they wanted a powerful top of the rotation. They made the highest offer of all teams for Kevin Gausman. He took less money to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays. Kevin Gausman leads ALL SP in WAR in 2023.
.
@TonyPauline
says a league executive told him “Jets will get Deebo Samuel, that number 10 pick belongs to San Francisco.” He goes on to say there are rumors tonight they have told Deebo he can seek a trade…thought around league is
#Jets
will make an “offer they can’t refuse”.
As of this tweet:
Justin Verlander has a 3.89 ERA on the Astros since his trade from the Mets.
Max Scherzer has a 3.66 ERA on the Rangers since his trade from the Mets.
Nothing special from either since getting dealt.
This sucks. I really like San Francisco. A lot of people don’t. They have the money to lure the big stars, but it seems like none of them want to take it.
Heard
#Mets
and Javy Baez are not all that far off. Can’t report that they are close but we are not talking about a huge gap here…still others in play including
#Tigers
as mentioned by many today.
Shocking how the Mets season has gone.
Mets have 2 rookies who are contending for ROTY.
One of which leading all rookies in homers and top 3 in NL position player WAR and the other leading all NL qualified rookie SP in WAR and ERA.
And they are 17.5 GB in division.
Pretty bad look for Bauer who clearly admits fault and recognizes the severity of the mistakes he has made. Doesn’t add up at all when compared to what his public statement was in the video he posted.
Before their sexual encounters became national news, MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer and the woman who accused him of rape discussed what happened in a 27-minute call covertly recorded by police.
It’s never been publicly available until now.
FULL STORY:
Sources have told me that the Giants have been searching for a “big-fish” ever since the Carlos Correa deal fell through. After missing on Ohtani, it’s very possible they emerge as serious suitors for Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, or Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Mets and Correa is more complicated legally than most other free agent signings. It’s the main reason why it’s been so quiet…leaks could cause a good bit of trouble. Like I’ve reported before, silence isn’t always a bad thing.

Just to put into perspective how INSANE Edwin Diaz's season has been

My Mets untouchables:
Pete, Diaz, Lindor, Nimmo, Álvarez, and Senga.
Price on Parada and Baty high, Vientos meh, Mauricio also meh.
McNeil can go. Fun player but 32 w/ absolutely no power and when he’s not getting on base he’s useless w/ a really bad attitude when he fails.
Boomer Esiason (
@7BOOMERESIASON
) reports on
@WFANmornings
that Joe Douglas called Odell Beckham yesterday…later says that his feeling is Corey Davis is staying (possibly even w/ OBJ addition) and adds that Jets fans will be happy when they see what $ Rodgers is willing to take.
Here’s the big question, with the Mets loading up on prospects and dishing veteran major league talent, could they be gearing up for a run at Shohei Ohtani in FA with a pitch at contending for the last 5+ years of his contract starting in 2025?
Sources tell me a team to monitor in the Justin Verlander sweepstakes is the San Diego Padres. With the Dodgers reportedly involved and the Padres looking from the outside in, could they go ALL in for a chance at a World Series?
As it stands right now, the New York Mets are sixth in 2024 MLB Draft Lottery
#1
pick odds. If they do end up with a top 6 selection after the lottery, they will NOT be docked the 10 picks from their Luxury Tax overage.
If Max Scherzer really was truthful that the only substance he was using was rosin, I’m expecting a heartfelt apology from MLB after the game. It very well could be the difference in this game. Ridiculous.
