Sonny Gray did say he appreciates his time with the Yankees: "I've been a better baseball player, husband, everything from having that experience and going through that."

Sonny Gray said he is looking forward to the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. "It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees," he said.

Regarding his poor experience in New York/with the Yankees, Sonny Gray said he "never wanted to go in the first place."

Sonny Gray said Steven Matz, his former Cardinals teammate, had "nothing but great things to say" about his experience with the Red Sox in late 2025.

The Red Sox made the trade official: They got Sonny Gray and cash from the Cardinals, in exchange for Richard Fitts, Brandon Clarke, and a player to be named later or cash considerations. The inclusion of a PTBNL or cash to the Cardinals is one more small wrinkle.
