My dad has spent the last 4 years getting his PhD while working two full time jobs. He did it because he didn’t want me to be the only Doctor in the family. At the age of 65, world, meet Dr. Emmanuel Uloko 😭 my father, my biggest cheerleader and who I compare every man to.

This shift didn’t happen by accident. It happened because of loud, brilliant, patient-first voices like @KellyCaspersonMD, @laurabukavina, @ashleygwinter, @DrRachelRubin—and because orgs like @AmerUrological are listening. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re moving.

What I love most about urology? We move fast—and we listen. In 2020, women’s sexual health was barely a whisper. Now we have GSM guidelines that acknowledge androgens and updated survivorship care for women post-cystectomy. Humbled to be a part of this work.

It's often claimed that the clitoris contains 8,000 nerve endings, but this is a figure that comes from a study of cows. Dr. @MariaUloko analyzed the nerve structure of the clitoris in humans and found that the number is much higher!

A woman patient told me they asked their doctor for help because she had a low libido. The doctor told her to “lose weight so your husband is more interested in you.” We still have a long way to go in battling weight stigma even in physicians.

It’s okay to be perceived as a “bitch” when that advocacy results in measures that keep you or your loved ones alive. We’ll expand on that later but today I’m focusing on the joy of time.

There are many lessons that have been reinforced throughout this experience that I will expand on later. Miracles are real. Healthcare is fucked. It’s so broken, so dangerous for people- especially people of color, medical errors are common and you HAVE to be your own advocate.

I begged him to keep fighting. One foot in front of the other to cross the finish line. And ya’ll he fought bc 3 hours later he was extubated and I was feeding him meatloaf. His first words after being extubated were “have you eaten” and “why aren’t you at work?” 🥺😅

My dad is the king of the pump up talk. If you’re ever doubting yourself, call my dad and by the end of the conversation -you’ll feel invincible. So I gave my dad a “dad” level pep talk.

I was then given the time to say goodbye to him privately. I thanked him for the time we had together, the lessons he taught me and selfishly I begged him for more time.

The last year, I’ve made bold and scary career moves to try to secure my freedom which to me means being able to control my time. BC of this, I had the freedom to immediately drop everything to fly home to be with him for what I assumed was the last time.
