Just for context, when told that the Greens generally go down in by-elections and that its not a bad night for Bandt, @KosSamaras claimed on the ABC that the Greens held stable and actually went up 1% in Aston - This isn't true. The greens went down 2% in Aston and 4.5% in Fadden

Macnamara, currently one of the most marginal seats in Australia, is so marginal that just a 0.3% swing would be enough for a Green gain. However, there's been talk over the seat's boundaries - especially in it's strongly Jewish east of Caulfield. 1/7🧵 (Thread)

Fair, but at the same time Australia has almost 200k people per electorate, more than almost any country. 2 effects of this are: b) lower proportionality and a perpetuation of the two-party system b) gargantuan divisions like this one in 2007, very hard to represent at all!

Update on Tas! After alot of consideration and alot of data reviewing I'm going to uncall the 4th Liberal seat in Braddon. They risk an outside threat from the Greens, however it's still definitely in their favour. 🟦 LIB: 13 🟥 ALP: 10 🟩 GRN: 5 🟨 JLN: 2 ⬜️ IND: 2 ⬜️ ???: 3

The big party I haven't talked about however is the CDU, the party of Angela Merkel. Their polling numbers have increased 8% since the election to about 31%, clearly in the lead. Most of their voters are against the government, but afraid of the AfD gaining power. (10/14)

The Greens anti-nuclear policy has damaged the government, but they are polling around 14% (the same as last election). The FPD however have lost almost all support from last election; 11%, and have fallen down to just 4% due to their affiliation with the government. (9/14)

The most extreme effect of this has been the halting of the nord stream pipeline as a result of the war, and general sanctions against Russia for the war against Ukraine. AfD voters link this to rising energy and housing prices throughout the country. (7/14)

Note - Ipswich West is one of the seats One Nation gained in 1998, was considered a possible gain for ON in 2017 (losing 59 to 41) + this by-election will be the first test for ON without Pauline Hanson in the name in QLD since she rejoined the party (maybe anywhere?) (1/2) 🧵
