My mom, worried about the many free and reduced priced lunch kids in West Virginia, just suggested that school bus drivers keep their routes but deliver meals Mon-Fri. And it’s... kinda brilliant?
“Twitter that, maybe someone will listen!” she says.
One time as an intern covering a chili cookoff I mistakenly wrote that volunteers took 2 hour shits instead of shifts and it MADE IT TO PRINT. I lowkey cried but my editors laughed and hung up the clip in the office. Reporters, join me in sharing ur cringe, IT’S THE HOLIDAYS.
One thing about student loan forgiveness that people who have not experienced poverty don’t grasp is that even if you get all the scholarships, you need loans to *live.* I had a full academic ride but only paid off my loans last year, because I used them to pay rent for 4 years.

Before quarantine, I imagined working from home would mean elaborate healthy workday breakfasts since I have access to my kitchen, however, I regret to inform you that I just put pb and syrup on an eggo and did not even take the time to use a fork but ate it like a cookie
New: California’s first ever superintendent of equity, a six figure taxpayer-funded job dedicated to kids of color, lives on the east coast, where he holds another job. (He was also in Thurmond’s wedding.)
His hire appears to violate state worker policy.
My dad died last week because he was an addict. Since this pubbed, I’ve lived in irrational fear that ppl would read it even tho I put it into the world. The best way I can think to honor him and my family is to share it in hopes that it comforts someone.

Hi today is my last day at POLITICO. But I’m not leaving Sacramento! I’m headed to

The paper that raised me, whose credo at least used to be “sustained outrage,” fired reporters for raising ethical questions on behalf of the very outraged community they’ve represented so well.
A great childhood friend of mine died in that mining explosion. He was 21.

The Oakland school board just voted to require students get vax by Jan or else be transfered to an independent school or unenrolled entirely.
The vote comes despite operational/capacity concerns, tight deadline and equity: Black and Latino kids have lower vax rates than peers.

child mental health news conference happening now:
In California, about a third of 7th and 9th graders and half of 11th graders experienced "chronic sadness" last school year. Suicide rates for California youth ages 10-18 increased by 20% from 2019 to 2020.

Newsom told CNN this week he's "been living through Zoom school."
Last week at SOTS: "Jen and I, we live this as parents of 4 young children helping them cope with the fatigue of what my youngest son calls Zoom school."
His kids have been in in-person private school since Fall.
Newsom says his kids have attended school on Zoom on and off for months in response to a question about claims that Newsom has lied about his kids being educated virtually.
It’s been a long 8 years since I graduated journalism school, and my disdain for “the creation of a task force” masquerading as news grows each day. Every time an official says the word “stakeholder,” a journalist loses her wings.
New details about last night’s horrific shooting at church:
The mother had pushed for a restraining order for her 3 girls against their father, warning that they weren’t safe months before he killed them during a supervised visit approved by the court.
Update on my mom continuing to save the world:
She was one of few allowed into nursing home today because my step dad’s dad is expected to pass away any day now. (They’re making exception for those visits.) While there, she offered to help patients FaceTime w/ their loved ones😭
You guys, all the love — especially from my fellow reporters across the country — has meant so much to me and snuck in just before 2018 went down as the toughest year of my career. Subscribe to your local paper wherever you are. The news is very real and so are we.

@MackenzieMays
is the hands down hero of this piece on the difficulty of being a local journalist when some in power decide it’s to their advantage to try and convince a community that journalists are enemies:
The California Department of Education announced that private school enrollment is up and public school enrollment is ~way~ down, with 160k fewer kids enrolled than last year.
The question now is will families that left because of distance learning return post pandemic?
Anti-poverty advocates are surprised by this veto from Newsom tonight.
“This is going to mean that people lose their vehicles over minor unpaid parking tickets. It means they are going to be punished because they’re poor.”
“Joining the 15 women who’ve come forward with credible stories about how the man grabbed, badgered, belittled, mauled, molested, and assaulted them, only to see the man turn it around, deny, threaten, and attack them, never sounded like much fun.”
This is the most serious allegation of sexual violence against Trump ever made (aside from the marital rape claim that Ivana later walked back): via

A Cali school board thinks its meeting isn’t live and members imply parents use teachers as babysitters and are mad they can’t smoke pot since kids are home.
“Bitch, if you’re going to call me out, I’m gonna fuck you up,” one member says of a critic.
Following my story about a top California ed official quietly living in Philly, a second official assigned to oversee equity issues in CA schools has resigned. She lives in Texas. Via

I didn't apply for a single unpaid internship because it just wasn't an option; I worked a job every summer. Not only do these policies shut out low income kids, whose world view is important to the heart of journalism, but perpetuates an exploitative martyr journalist narrative.
One other layer...for future journalists...your first few years feel unpaid. I made 16.5k my first two years and worked harder than I’ve ever worked. There is a reason not everyone makes it in this business. I don’t have time for those of you who don’t understand grind ✌🏼
I am nearly 30 yrs old and having a recurrent dream that I didn’t know I had a class in my schedule and therefore missed it all semester and failed. Riveting stuff I know, but the *panic* when I realize I was supposed to be attending this whole time. Share your mundane dreams plz
California teachers want childcare upon going back to classrooms, and say it’s past time for a policy that helps women and working families.
But other essential worker parents who have survived a year without school say the demand is salt in the wound:
Oakland Unified is voting tomorrow on a resolution named after George Floyd that would eliminate the school district’s police department — yes, it has its own department
There is this disturbing phenomenon where people* leave the newspaper they have their entire careers to thank for and then make a hobby out of publicly criticizing it and the young reporters working hard to keep it going and I... don’t get it.

Still thinking about how last night when the CHP said there was blood on the walls in the capitol bathroom my first question was “what’s it say?”
CHP:
Other members of the press corps:
Me: has literally no one seen a movie?
I LOVE THIS ❤️
And she most likely went into own pockets to do this for her students.
HEROIC considering teachers don't get paid much.
Teacher deserve to be paid like college educated professionals.
RAISE TEACHER'S PAY!
When we adopted Norah 6 years ago the vet said she would grow up to be a medium sized mut.
Reader, she was a malnourished Great Dane.
I now have a king bed.
Newsom just asked about
@kimguilfoyle
, his ex wife, whose appearance at the RNC has been turned into many a meme.
"I respectfully defer to the next question."
Every reporter in the white house press corps should support those being cut off by asking same questions — over and over again until they are answered. We are all on the same team, especially now.
💉 Big news in California: anyone 50+ will be eligible for a vaccine starting April 1. Anyone 16+ starting April 15.
Wondering if this has districts scrambling for a plan to return high school students? Until now, focus has been on younger students because of low transmission.
I don’t have children and don’t claim this to be a proper comparison but my Great Dane loudly cried, BUSTED DOWN her doggy door and ate a piece of paper all because I neglected her for a work call, a moment of silence for actual working parents juggling distance learning my god
As a McClatchy alum, I know how disheartening it is to put your all into a story, and see it resonate or make change, but then be forced to reckon with a click tally.
Clicks do not equal worth. I am so proud of my

We have alarming news.
The owner of The Sacramento Bee is trying to tie journalists’ pay to the number of clicks their stories get.
We’re urging the company to reconsider. Here's our letter to McClatchy’s new CEO about how this could hurt our community.

After nearly starving in the jungle, they immediately starting working when they got to the US to send cash to their kids. They said they only got on the DeSantis flight because they were promised more $

I don’t think I was supposed to see this talk with the governor today, but I did.
“If we wait for the perfect, we might as well just pack it up and just be honest with folks that we’re not going to open for in-person instruction this school year.”
I followed
@MichaelDTubbs
on a sort of poverty tour from Antioch to Fresno and LA. Everywhere, the stories were the same: living in poverty is exhausting and the safety net is a tricky game in which a misstep can mean homelessness in an instant.
Hard not to see the metaphor when watching a superintendent in CA talk about Delta surge issues, teacher shortages and wildfire evacuations and then see her office shake. "Sorry, we just had an earthquake."
A Proud Boy lost a seat on the local school board but 2,600+ people voted for him in Sacramento County.
“It’s short-sighted to say, well, they didn’t win. What this is telling us is still frightening.”
Did someone mansplain one of my own tweets to me today? Yes
But did
@TheMandyMoore
like one of my tweets today? Also yes
The Twitter giveth and the Twitter taketh away!!
The judge I interviewed about allegations that he was apathetic toward mothers in the jury box repeatedly told me that I was "challenging him in his official capacity."
That is *literally* my job.
This got buried in some other California education news today but the governor confirmed that the state will be changing its social distancing requirement for schools to 3 ft as well.
CDC cuts the school social distancing requirement to 3 feet. Could have implications for California districts trying to expand reopening — and on full reopening in the fall.

Everyone deserves a paycheck but this is especially sinister in an industry where people go the extra mile every day, blurring the lines between work and life, not for the boss but for the people. My colleagues today have been hurt by something they love:
This strikes a nerve with me not only has someone who has spent a lot of time interviewing teens but also Appalachians. A "like" or even an "ain't" is not indicative of intelligence.
If you're focusing on how we talk, instead of what we're saying, you may be missing the point.
Imagine being a 17-year-old girl trying to explain racism, spontaneously and on the record, to an adult male reporter, and then he transcribes every "like" and "um" that you say in order to mock you on Twitter. This is not the purpose of journalism.
Fresno County warns of Covid spike in youth: ER visits for those under 18 years old are now exceeding visits by 65+
“These data are a sobering premonition for what we can expect once schools reopen this fall," health officer says, urging vaccines and blaming Delta.
There are pics of the governor’s children circulating bc they were spotted at summer camp w/o masks.
His critics are making this French Laundry redux because it violates state rules (he pulled his kids from the camp.)

The vote comes one day after LA Unified school board members refused to do the same.
