Westward the Women is criminally underseen and a huge get for the BFI Film on Film Festival. I’ve been lobbying London cinemas to show it for years with no luck. Ecstatic to finally have the chance to see it on the big screen. One of the great westerns as far as I’m concerned.

While I came away from writing this feature with more empathy for “disruptive” audiences members than I had previously, it does feel to me like we’re fighting a losing battle sometimes.

You can’t blame her for not being plugged in to the years-long saga of an independent film that few publications cared enough to report on before or after its release. And you can’t blame us for going in expecting a shitshow. But those expectations are irreconcilable.

@ThePCCLondon But as the credits rolled, the 100-strong audience was loudly admonished by a woman who had turned up in good faith to see Flatley. I felt a pang of guilt. Yes, she was one in 100, but because our expectations were wildly misaligned, 99 of us nonetheless ruined her screening.

The issue of clashing audience expectations is fascinating to me. In 2022, I howled throughout the UK premiere of Michael Flatley’s Blackbird at @ThePCCLondon. The film’s distribution struggles were well documented. Fans of ego-driven schlock set their expectations accordingly.

Had to excavate my reflexive snobbery to write this. In doing so – and in speaking with people much smarter and more relaxed than I am – I came away from this with more empathy for people who choose to experience cinema in different ways to me.

No Other Land depicts the horrifying violence Palestinians in the West Bank endure under apartheid. Yesterday, its co-director Hamdan Ballal was beaten in his home by settlers before being detained by Israeli forces. People applauded Hamdan. Now they are silent. Free Hamdan.
