Expanding the number of registered nurse degree apprenticeships will also allow our amazing healthcare support workers and nursing associates to take the step into registered nurse training.

We have seen there’s been a fall in midwifery acceptances and mature students applying for nursing courses. There’s more for us to do to understand why this is, and what we can do to encourage more of these groups to train through apprenticeships and alternative routes.

The number of nursing students being accepted onto courses has increased by 130 compared to 2023, and by more than 1,100 compared to pre-pandemic. The number of school and college leavers being accepted onto courses also increased by more than 1,000 since then too.

As a nurse myself, I warmly welcome all the new nursing students who started their training this year. I am also pleased that the @ucas_online data released today shows growth this year in the number of new nursing students in England.
