I disagree with Villeneuve. Star Wars was always for kids. Even though it's my personal favourite, I can accept that ROTJ wasn't as strong as Empire, but to say it "derailed" the franchise is ridiculous. It gave us Luke as a Jedi Master and the perfect ending to Anakin's arc.
