Bell ringing is a team activity that stimulates the brain and helps keep you fit ... it also makes a glorious sound!

Our district six bell striking competition was a fun way for ringers to test their #bellringing skills and ensure that we think about the sound of the #bells for everyone around when we ring. Congratulations to the Royal Jubilee ringers!.
Trophy winners in Middlesex!! For the first time our ringers entered the local association bellringing striking contests. Their 'call change' band won the 'Novice Cup' and the 'method' band achieved 2nd place for the 'Jersey Cup'.

Many churches have a night setting for clock chimes, equally some have sound control to reduce the sound of the #bells for practices so that #bellringing is only heard at full volume for services. Luckily most people love the tradition of hearing the bells ring out in the day.

#bellringing remembers and Paul Mounsey was a ringer who will appreciate the sound of #bells rung in his memory after his many years of ringing in some of the best London bell towers.
The 10th bell at @MagnusMartyr was tolled 71 times prior to High Mass remembering Paul Mounsey, who co-donated this bell and chaired the bells trust to install the new bells.

Listen out for #bells on Thursday as #VEDay80 is marked by #bellringing to echo the celebrations of 1945 in London and across the UK. Ringing is a great way to feel the connection with the past as we ring just as they did in generations past for sad times and happy events.

If you visit on a Thursday lunchtime you will hear the bell ring for service. Unusually this is a full circle bell on a wheel (usually part of a set of six or more) so it’s a slower toll than chiming bells.
St Margaret Pattens, a stunning 17th-century church, takes its name from patten makers—artisans who crafted wooden overshoes to navigate London’s muddy streets. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, it’s a hidden gem of the city’s history. Stop by for a peaceful visit! ⛪✨ #London

And in those spires we often find bells! As a ringer I perhaps notice the spires and towers of London more than most but this has some very evocative shots.

Bellringing 300 years ago was really starting to extend and this example of a peal on ten bells is a great chance to demonstrate that ringers today have retained those skills. Enjoy hearing this peal on the north side of London Bridge.
Saturday marks the 300th ann of the 1st peal at St Magnus, which was rung by the College Youths. This Society will reprise the same changes at 10am. Here is the entry in the CY Peal Book and a peal board presented in 2008 by the Bridge Ward Club @dioceseoflondon @Londonringing

And when you say real bats you are thinking of the flying mouse or the ringers! #bellringing introduces many to ladybirds and butterflies but some belfry’s are lucky enough to include bats (ideally kept apart from the swinging #bells).
In the belfrys, no less. #wearebellringing @ChrisGPackham come see real bats in real belfrys.

#bellringing is a skill which starts simple and can become as complicated as you can manage. Handbell ringing to this standard is a rare skill and well worth listening to. It’s hard to believe that you hear this same music from church #bells (louder, slower but the same ‘tune’).

I wonder how many people heard #bells ringing in the New Year when they wouldn’t normally as the wind carried the sound of #bellringing further than normal this year! Happy New Year to ringers everywhere!.

This was posted by @tiedbell elsewhere, commenting that #bellringing has a similar health benefit with ‘flow’: Ringing #bells is great for mental health and physical health, especially as it includes community connections. So ring in a Happy New Year!.

I recognise the example shown here! St Bartholomew the Great next to Smithfield market and Bart’s hospital has the oldest complete ring of five, anti-clockwise for full circle #bellringing They are regularly rung for Sunday evensong and for weddings.
We have improved the way we display the date of a bell. Where undated, we display the founder's period of activity. When submitting an estimated date for a bell please don't provide anything outside the given period or alert us if you believe the period needs correcting.

Full circle bellringing requires a person, who has learnt how to control the bell, for each bell. There are churches with mechanical chimes but the UK mainly has full circle bellringing whilst Europe mainly has chiming bells. Bellringing is fun and the sound is unique.
It's a nice tradition that they're done by hand, but machines have been ringing bells for centuries - a lack of humans won't stop the bells ringing on Christmas morning.
