An unlikely symbol of the L.A. protests? Hot-pink street furniture. Wrote about the backstory of these custom-designed pieces and how their intention to have "endless configurations" takes on new meaning today.

The architecture firm Rios designed the street furniture for Gloria Molina Grand Park to have “endless configurations.” They never could have imagined it would be used as a shield.

what did the keepers of some of L.A.'s most famous homes take when those sites were threatened by the recent wild fires? a bread knife with a bow around it, a rare Charles Moore sculpture, and fireplace andirons.

When the Los Angeles-area fires came for the Eames and Gamble houses, preservationists had to choose what to save. Here's what they took.

@FastCompany And lastly, what Neri is building is fascinating. In my very biased opinion, it's worth the $1 (or $20 if you're feeling spendy and want to buy for a year!) to read about it.

@FastCompany I should add that as a writer it's hard to put a story behind the paywall because you know it's only going to reach a fraction of people it might have otherwise. But hopefully it's the fraction who actually is going to take the time to engage with the piece.

Seeing a lot of 'it's behind a paywall' comments on this story. Yes! Journalism takes a lot of time and care. There are few ways to build a sustainable biz other than to have readers pay for the work. Even if you don't read @FastCompany regularly, I hope you'll pay for this one
Inside Neri Oxman’s radical, whimsical $100 million lab - Fast Company An incredible piece on the OXMAN lab, sadly protected by a paywall. Perhaps if there is enough online interest, @FastCompany will open the wall.

how do we respond to new tools of our time? @ctrlzee talks to @pentagram's paula scher on the backlash against her use of AI. she compares the outrage to when x-acto knives replaced razor blades for paste-up...and when desktop publishing replaced that https://t.co/t3ORIDzWmf

There are currently ten times more miles of high-speed rail track globally than there were in 2000. Seven countries have inaugurated high speed rail networks since 2017, and another half dozen more have their first lines under construction.
In the past decade, a dizzying diversity of countries have joined the bullet train community. What's holding the U.S. back?

my latest for @FastCompany @FastCoDesign — I wrote about political spam, and why trump's unofficial merch feels like it's part of his brand even if it isn't. The use of humor works to unify both old and new supporters through an anti-media mindset https://t.co/BTQDJDYCRH

Donald Trump has created a universe of kitschy, bad design. This visual language—let’s call it ‘Political Spam’—has impact far beyond Trump’s merch machine.

Spent the last few weeks learning about now NYC's built environment became the perfect habitat for rats—and how the city is experimenting with new design and policy approaches to solve the problem. Spoiler: extermination alone won't work.
