Commemoration during and after WW1 took many forms. Many companies had rolls of honour marking the service and sacrifice of former employees. Here are the stories of the men of Chiesmans in Lewisham.

Light & Shadow - Poplar. Photography taken in the pedestrian bridge leading to Poplar Docklands Light Railway station. It's a great spot to watch the sun set over the city. #wexmondays #fsprintmonday

Just added a 1959 map of the Lewisham market area - newly available via @natlibscotmaps - to the recent blogpost on post-bombing rebuilding. Compared with the late 1940s map, it illustrates nicely the difference in reconstruction on the east and west sides:

Apparently #thicktrunktuesday is a thing, so here's one from #Lewisham village:.The famous horse chestnut next to the old Roebuck on the High St (opposite St Stephen's church). Said to have stood from 1680s until the 1860s, shown here in an 1830s cyclopedia and c1850s painting.

The new branch built in the 1950s was supposedly “the most modern of jewellers’ shops in the country” with beautiful display cases in the entrance. Find out more:
At last, the final in the trilogy about the Lewisham market V1 flying bomb: part 3 - rebuilding. It describes how the area around the bomb site - eventually - recovered from the destruction of 1944.

Nice bit of history about Sanders jewellers, whose Lewisham branch was destroyed by the July 1944 V1 strike.
Then & Now: Brixton Rd, 1987 - 2023. Located under a railway viaduct Sanders & Co, jewellers begun in Streatham, 1905. The Brixton branch opened 1908 and became the firm’s H.Q. It has been closed on and off for several years, it was last a Costa Coffee.
