SCOTUSwatcher and insane textualist. I haven't gone to law school, but I look at a lot of Gorsuch memes, and really that's just as good.

I used principal components factoring on SCOTUS data (since KBJ joined) to quantify the main ideological axis that divides the justices. There were some surprises! I thought NG would be closer to CT/SA, and that JR/ACB/BK would be closer to EK/KBJ/SS.

There's been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the American right and fractures within today's GOP. What does it mean to be MAGA? Can President Trump’s coalition remain cohesive once he exits the stage? To explore these questions, the @ManhattanInst has conducted one of the

Now, as a separate matter, I do believe in some of that gender ideology stuff. And you're welcome to argue with me about that. But as for the word "сis", it's just a neutral concept expressing something that we all agree on. (12/12)

So when I refer to someone as "сis", I'm not thereby taking a position on what it means to be a woman. I'm not thereby asserting "trans women are women" or anything else like that. I'm simply pointing out that this particular person is not trans. (11/?)

"Gender ideology" is not changing the name of "women" to "сis women". After all, there are plenty of biological women who now identify as trans men, and "сis women" excludes such people. "Cis" communicates additional information beyond gender. (10/?)

Suppose we use the word "woman" solely as a biological concept. We still need a word like "сis" in order to express whether or not a woman thinks she's a man. When I call a woman "сis", I'm saying that she knows she's a woman. (9/?)

The strangest part of all this is that *even if* someone completely rejects all gender ideology, they *still* have a concept of not being trans! It is an undisputed fact - Matt Walsh and JK Rowling would agree - that the woman in this video is not trans. (8/?)

But the thing is, the concept of being non-trans doesn't have anything to do with how we define "man" or "woman". There are non-trans men and non-trans women, and the word "сis" refers to that entire category, men and the women alike. (7/?)

Ordinarily, if someone were uncomfortable with a word, I would just replace it with a synonym. "Non-trans" might work. But it seems they would be just as offended by that, because the part they object to is the label of non-transness. (6/?)

Some people seem to be offended by being called сis women instead of simply being called women. In their eyes, the only reason someone would call someone a сis woman is if they believed in, for lack of a better word, gender ideology. (5/?)

But after looking into this debate more, it seems like that's not the core reason people are offended by the word. Instead, they seem to think that the word carries some sort of implicit assumption about what it means to be a man or woman. (4/?)

I think some people are offended because they think trans people used "сis" as an insult. In my experience, this isn't true. I'm сis and most of my friends are trans, and I've never heard any of them use it as an insult. (3/?)

Brief preface: to people offended by the word, I'm not trying to argue that you're wrong to be offended. Your emotions are what they are; if you're uncomfortable with it, I won't say it to you. But I think if you understood how people use it, you might not be uncomfortable. (2/?)

There's a very strange debate going around about whether the word "сis" - as in, not trans - is a slur. Thread:🧵
