This International Women’s Day, I want to celebrate the inspiring women I work alongside who are committed to delivering a polio-free world 🌍. Together, we will create a healthier future for all children.
In 2021, the WHO African region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region. We must scale up proven interventions, increase access to diagnostics and treatment.

As the 73rd Session of the Regional Committee for Africa kicks off, let's remind ourselves of the vital role immunization plays in safeguarding public health. We need to keep our focus on immunization and building back immunity!, ensuring a healthier future for all Africans.
Gender inequity is a pervasive issue with far-reaching consequences on global development and health outcomes. It's time we stand together to remove the barriers that hinder women’s progress and realization of their full potential.

Let's break down barriers and create a level playing field for women in science. Science should be inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of gender. Investing in women in science is not just the right thing to do, it's also smart and will drive progress and innovation.
Women continue to remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles in the health sector yet they form 70 percent of the global health workforce, addressing this will result in positive healthcare outcomes and achieving gender equality.
The African Regional Certification Commission is underlining the significance of vaccination coverage in the battle against

Despite the heavy burden of malaria in the African Region, there is hope! Between 2015 and 2021, Cabo Verde, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe met the target of a reduction in malaria case incidence of 40% or more.
The pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for global health cooperation and solidarity. Let's work together to strengthen health systems and ensure that all countries have the resources they need to protect their populations.
