September 11, 2001, is a day forever etched in our memories—many of us remember exactly where we were that morning. More than twenty years later, we honor those lost by teaching our students about the tragedy, the unity it inspired, and the lasting impact it had on our nation.

We’ll never forget the lives we lost on September 11, 2001. Let’s continue to honor their memories, and the courage of our first responders who put themselves in harm’s way.

So many Black North Carolinians have made all our lives better, and we are forever indebted to them for their efforts. During Black History Month, we celebrate their sacrifices and take inspiration from their contributions so that we too can make the lives of others better.

When I was a teacher, my students and I always took time this month to honor the generations of Black Americans who fought against injustice to achieve equal rights. May we all reflect on our past as we continue working to build a society that lives up to its democratic ideals.
