I don't think it's our conditions - historically speaking, now is not particularly bad. And great art often comes out of the worst of conditions. I think the problem is in our souls, and our shallow, commodified, status-seeking relationship with art.
sometimes a paranoid thought i have is that contemporary fiction is bad because so much of present conditions are so embarrassing that rendering them in prose is humiliating but then remember that lichtenberg said the same thing about the 18th century

If anyone prefers e-books because they need a larger print size (Grendel Wept is set in 12 pt Seria Pro), please let me know here, and I can work on a large print edition in 16 or 18 pt.
@Cellarspectre Print-only, but if anyone needs a large-print edition I'll make it my first priority.

We’re trapped in the decaying final chapters of the 20th century—a prolonged, stagnant fin-de-siècle.

I saw two videos regarding anime characters with the highest kill count and I giggled as they had no idea what the Dirty Pair had done.

Today is one of those days where I once again find myself wondering if there is anything harder than trying to sell a book... After a few years at it, not a whole lot comes to mind.

He has no desire to finish, but he would probably be in breach of contract if he ever says he won't. So he has to keep kicking the can down the road while he lives out his Hollywood fantasy as an HBO big shot.
Why can't George R.R. Martin just admit he has severe writers block and can't finish his books instead of always lying and blaming everything and everyone else?
