A great paper Sam, congratulations!
Was early America a "maritime nation"? Most revolutionary-era histories elide the importance of maritime trade to the U.S. economy & politics In @hamiltonsoc's new book, I argue you can't understand early U.S. foreign policy without considering America's relationship to the sea

that was a really good show and, @jkuehn50, @cdrsalamander and Mark Tempest in fine form.
Here's a one of the great pullquotes from today's #Midrats Podcast with @jkuehn50. He pulls everyone in: @mercoglianos, @johnkonrad, @Lazarus_Navy ... all the usual suspects. If you want to hear the full episode, head over to iTunes, Speaker, Spotify, or wherever you get your

It is worth noting that the nations that joined NATO after the fall of the Berlin Wall did so because they HATED Russia and wanted to be in Western Collective security. No nation was forced to join NATO. Russia has a 1000+ year reputation as a bad actor.
Great powers are reasonable until they figure out there is no obstacle to being unreasonable. A related observation: You can contain Russia, or you can worry about alienating it, but not both.

As the undersea domain grows more contested, U.S. nuclear submarines remain the Navy’s decisive undersea capability. In a recent @defenseopinion article, @Admiral_Foggo and @Lazarus_Navy explain why. ⬇️

Wake up America.
Chinese fishing militia vessels are swarming inside Philippines' waters, almost creating a blockade. China is increasingly using its massive fishing fleet as an instrument of pressure against other nations, especially the Philippines. @MalayaIrredenta @CarpioJudge @nthusharon

Seapower demands expert intelligence Excellent project!
Venice had a network of spies and diplomats in every court of Europe. Upon their return, they were required to deliver reports to the Venetian Senate. These reports were so invaluable for understanding the state of the world that they were often smuggled out and sold to rich

We hosted another Congressional Breakfast on Capitol Hill this morning, featuring Rep. Wittman and Rep. Kiggans as our keynote speakers. They touched on their priorities in Congress to support American shipbuilding and the sea services through both large and small scale changes.
