this is one the facts that messes with my head the most: there is really only one part of the US where “mary, merry, and marry” are pronounced differently. those are completely different words.

The telephone icon isn't outdated, it is the opposite. It's ingrained in culture now, just like the floppy disk icon to save a file. Icons can have semantic meaning, like the biohazard sign, even though it doesn't resemble anything "real".
I think it's time Apple changed the Phone app icon to a real phone.
