Imagine something's tampering with food supplies. The 'something' would quickly be labelled a national security priority. Except when that 'something' is climate change, this doesn't happen. In a new @IPPR, we highlight the security blind spots on climate.

Today @theCCCuk releases its assessment on UK climate adaptation. It shows a dangerous apathy to systemic risks. E.g.; "there aren’t enough indicators to assess overall progress accurately" on becoming more resilient to systemic risks in the food system.

“Our security depends as much on tanks as it does on energy stability and an affordable supply. Whether or not you think the world is a more dangerous place, you can still improve the security of your society through renewables.”. Great talking with @WSJ .

In a fast-changing world amid the onset of tariffs and a pushback against green initiatives, some renewables-focused companies are forging new relationships.

Will climate risk assessment actually be improved?. We need it: eg, pension funds think 4C will only shave ~1% off assets. But even if assessments were improved, there might be a material disincentive to disclose. Are we in a 'delayed disclosure trap'? .

“It is widely understood that current [climate risk] assessments [on pension investments] may not be credible," said British Business Bank's Leandros Kalisperas, "but the question is, what is better than what we have, and how can it be implemented?”.

JP Morgan are ostensibly planning to profit from 3C+. Their rubbish risk assessments enable them to make this (false) claim. But will they actually improve the assessments, as many (including me) are calling for?. Here's a thought experiment 👇.

Absolutely!. As climate consequences escalate (in this case, heat) then it could frustrate our ability to tackle its causes (more power for cooling frustrating reductions energy use). Writ large, dynamics like this could *derail* the world from viable paths to avoiding the worst.

Half of the increase in global emissions from energy last year was down to 2024 being the hottest year on record, with intense heatwaves in China and India driving up coal use for AC. Signal of "derailment risk" @LaurieLaybourn?.
