7/8 Our clustering analysis suggests the start of a phenomenological state-space model to encapsulate experiences under ASCs which can assist in the identification of NCCs. Our work may assist in reducing redundancy in ASC investigation by synthesizing conceptual groundwork.

6/8 We coded terms across relevant schemes and clustered them in word clouds to suggest 8 core features of changed subjective experience implicated in ASCs: Perception/Imagery, Bodily Sense, Self-Boundary, Mystical Significance, Arousal, Time Sense, Emotion, and Cognition.

5/8 One example of neuro/physio schemes is Bayesian predictive processing models, including, but not limited to the REBUS model @RCarhartHarris. These models share that ASCs show a disruption in the balance of top-down and bottom-up signaling but with different parameters.

4/8 One example of a method-based scheme is the Systems Model, proposed by Charles Tart in the 1970s. Tart conceptualizes how ASC induction is the breakdown of baseline consciousness, followed by the establishment of a new state through patterning and disruptive forces.

3/8 One example of a state-based scheme is the Cartography of Ecstatic and Meditative States, proposed by Roland L. Fischer in the 1970s. He maps ASCs on a perception-hallucination continuum of ergotropic (hyperaroused) states (left), or trophotropic (hypoaroused) states (right).

2/8 Throughout their history, ASCs have been classified in schemes that are either state-based (i.e., by subjective experiences), method-based (i.e., by method of induction), or neuro/physio-based (i.e., neurobiological/physiological processes that accompany an ASC).

1/8 ASCs have generally been defined as transient and multidimensional changes from a baseline, waking state that can be subjectively recognized by an individual or objectively by another person through measurement.
