Wearables are about to get substantially better. The first round of PhDs whose native language is wearable sensing and remote monitoring are starting to graduate šŸ˜‰.

Apple lost the AI model race, but they're probably going to dominate AI-powered health wearables. If you think demand for a Whoop is crazy just wait until wearables are 100x smarter and personalized. Everyone will have an AI doctor/trainer on their wrist.

This viewpoint is very engineer coded. If the goal is primarily mechE/EE applied to humans/bio, a mechE/EE would be better. But if it’s to quantify a biological mechanism or engineering with biology (e.g. protein engineering, synthetic biology) then BioMed would be better.

hot take: nobody should major in biomedical engineering for undergrad. the reality is that companies don’t hire for the jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none archetype that those programs tend to produce. if you had to build a biomedical device with 3 engineers, would you hire 3.

Circadian phase advancing (west coast to east coast) is generally more difficult than phase delaying (east coast to west coast). The asymmetry of the circadian clock rears its head.

Sometimes, the way to understand the dynamics of a system is to give it a little push (perturbation). At steady-state, there is one behavior (like phase drift in the circadian system in darkness) but another behavior with perturbations (circadian entrainment with light).

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my podcast, Phases, which explores the science of rhythm and the art of timing. These concepts influence our daily lives, affect human health and performance, and reveal new ways of understanding the world around us. I invite you to check.

Study design is the art of conditional probabilities. You must appropriately prune factors that are not measurable, observable, or influential on your main question or outcome.

Human research on the menstrual cycle is largely an exercise of study design and conditional probabilities. Essentially, if you want better answers, you have to ask better questions.

Even if we could collect all of these simultaneously, which would take a lot of power for a wearable, the bottleneck is not in collection. It’s in the interpretation.

A short list of what AI glasses will track in order to replace you:. >Gaze direction (where the user is looking).>Pupil dilation (indicating interest, stress, or light response).>Blink rate (for fatigue or attention detection).>Saccadic eye movements (rapid shifts in focus).

Love this diurnal clock representation. Next let’s do the circadian clock.

Big opportunity here for airlines to implement circadian lighting based on flight timing, duration, and time zones between destinations. We have the science/engineering to support at this point.

What is this new trend of flying with the window shades down on DAYTIME flights? You’ve got sweeping views of the most intricate planet known to man and you’d rather sit in a dimly LED-lit tube?!. No wonder people are depressed & dysregulated.

Jet lag can disrupt the menstrual cycle. We don't know exactly how this occurs, but don't be surprised if your cycle is a little longer or shorter than normal following travel.

In reality, this would not ā€œskipā€ jet lag. Launching into space is independent of the changes in light diet that trigger jet lag.

ELON WANTS TO REPLACE PLANES WITH ROCKETS. SpaceX’s Starship could take you from New York to Sydney in under an hour. It skips jetlag by literally launching you into space and back down somewhere else. It’s like teleportation but with fire and Elon energy. Would you ditch

Your chronotype impacts your life beyond your preferred behavioral timing. It can influence assortative mating. You might meet (and mate) with someone with a similar chronotype simply because there is more temporal overlap.

I’m pretty skeptical of language encoding enough info to produce AGI. There’s so much processing in other hidden signals of the body that contribute to the human experience and intelligence. Language has reduced dimensionality.
