Another day, another multimillion dollar wage theft settlement. Amazing victory by the LTU casuals network and @NTEULaTrobe. When we fight, we win.
La Trobe University has agreed to pay back over $2 million in stolen wages to over 3,000 casual workers. https://t.co/hVftZ8L421

Sound familiar, @Sydney_Uni casuals? Let's get ready to take the fight to management this year. We'll be demanding pay for the hours we actually work for marking (and more) 💪💪💪
For many years casual academic staff at La Trobe have been directed to claim a predetermined number of hours, rather than the hours we actually work for marking.

We will be in touch as soon as we are able with information about next steps. We will continue to build power, organise and escalate our fight against wage theft and the exploitation of casuals at our institution. Encourage your colleagues to (re)join the NTEU!

Whilst La Trobe management will pretend that they fixed some kind of administrative system 'error' themselves, today's announcement is the result of the NTEU and the Casuals Network's hard work. Congratulations to each and every person casual who took part in the campaign.

La Trobe casuals took a fight to management about marking and many have come forward and taken strike action, speaking out about the reality of our lives under constant wage theft and insecurity.

Low pay with worse conditions make Deakin's deal a dud. Vote No then we return to bargaining and @NTEUnion can get staff a better deal, like the ones we've won at other #universities. VOTE NO - it's all you have to do, then we can do the rest: https://t.co/hZnfxtlG24

Wage theft & casualisation are systemic problems, having cost the sector upwards of $100mill. Yet the most egregious impact is the human cost - debt, the inability to plan for your future, the disconnect between perception and reality of an academic career, the lack of dignity.
These are some of the university workers who spoke to me about what it’s like to work in a sector with extraordinary levels of job insecurity and wage theft. Hard thing to speak out with so little job security

"Charmaine Katuwapitiyage started casual teaching in Bioscience at @LaTrobe University last year and alleges she has been underpaid. “For me, I’ve always done the work properly. I keep the actual hours it takes, and they never pay me for that,” she said." #wagetheft
Australia’s largest university, Monash, is seeking to avoid paying at least $10 million it allegedly owes its staff by using an unusual legal tactic to stop a wage theft claim launched against it.

Out 2020 survey of casual staff at La Trobe drew testimony from casuals across the university about the expectation that we will attend necessary work area/dept. meetings and catch up meetings without pay. We will continue to make noise about it until our attendance is paid!
Trade unionism is when you get an email inviting you to a morning tea with the heads of school and then a follow up email a few days later saying they’ll pay you to go.

This is quite insane
@johnnodvc @latrobe You proud of all the wage theft, staff cuts and course cuts, aye John? What about that time COVID lockdowns hit and one of the first things you did was to unemploy all casual staff without any safety net? https://t.co/jQtNnNofEL

1/ 🧵 Today it was announced that @latrobe Vice-Chancellor, John Dewar (@johnnodvc) will step down in 2024. Dewar has not responded to the demand of La Trobe casuals to meet with us and issue a formal apology for systemic wage theft.

4/ This announcement comes before any accountability has been taken by the university over wage theft - the demand for an apology and to meet with casuals from the Casuals Network remains ignored. A convenient time to announce a resignation. #highereducation #highered

3/ As Chair of Universities Australia and other industry bodies, Dewar must be made accountable for the systemic wage theft business model in #highered, which stolen millions of wages from casual workers all across our sector.

2/ Dewar has a bit of a habit of simply fleeing (underground!) when confronted by students and staff about systemic wage theft, or after the many course and staffing cuts over the last decade he has been La Trobe VC. https://t.co/jK3KK89Odo
