"You cannot plan a life if you don't have secure work, it's as simple as that."
We are out here to demand better working conditions for our staff (especially casuals) and better learning conditions for our students ✊️

Monash members are going on a half-day strike next Wednesday, 6 Sept to rally outside Uni Council meeting in CBD!
The Fair Work Commission has found in favour of the NTEU, meaning that no variation to the 2019 Agreement will occur.
The application was an aggressive move by Monash management.
The NTEU Monash branch condemns the reported violence and harassment against Monash students at Clayton campus.
There can be no place for violence on university campuses. These incidents come after repeated attacks on students in recent days.
📢 BREAKING: NTEU Monash members just voted for a 48hr strike starting Monday 9 October at midday, and ending Wednesday 11 October at midday.
Get ready for some Week 11 disruptions ✊

🧵Today we’re in the Fair Work Commission to fight
@MonashUni
’s disgraceful attempt to vary our expired EA.
Rather than back pay staff for work they’ve been required to do, Monash is is spending $$$ on high end lawyers to retrospectively take workers’ rights away.
1/ This morning, Vice-Chancellor Margaret Gardner announced a 3% administrative pay-rise for academic and professional staff at Monash University, effective from 3 December. Our union action brought this pay-rise.

@NTEUVictoria
4 days until NTEU Monash members take 48hrs of strike action, starting midday on Monday 9 October and ending 11.59am on Wednesday 11 October!!
We've got a packed agenda of actions over the 3 days so read on for our full strike schedule 💜
#monashstrikes
#betterunis
We had an excellent turnout at the Chancellery Building on Day 1 of our strike, where hundreds of members gathered to let Monash Council know how dissatisfied we are at the slow progress of bargaining negotiations.
Enough is enough - better working and learning conditions now!
Sums it up. Scott is a member of our core bargaining team. Not allowing him to bargain in between casual contracts because casuals aren't contracted over Summer is the perfect example of
@MonashUni
's attitude to casual staff.
That
@MonashUni
management has moved to disallow our casually employed bargaining representative from negotiations because all sessional teachers are made redundant at the end of semester 'til teaching recommences in the new year tells you everything you need to know about Uni HR
Just in:
@MonashUni
announces parking fee hike in line with CPI at discretion of VC.
Meanwhile, radio silence on a wage increase (also at discretion of VC).
You can’t make this stuff up!
Update: 96% of NTEU members at today's meeting voted in support of the Monash Branch applying to Fair Work for a Protected Action Ballot Order.
Industrial action is now officially on the cards - time for
@MonashUni
to

Midday Wed 20 March - Midday Thur 21 March !
We're still fighting for better wages and conditions, genuine job security, an end to potential wage theft, and a better
@MonashUni

@NTEUVictoria
Friendly reminder that uni mgmt doesn’t value pedagogy, staff or students -
@MonashUni
this week lost its Full Bench appeal to vary the clause in the EA that we alleged systemic breaches of & filed in Fed Court to sue for back pay over.
See you at the strike tomorrow, comrades!
Yesterday,
@MonashUni
shared their Log of Claims with staff, so in the spirit of transparency and openness, we're sharing it here too.
We thought it lacked some detail, so asked some of our
@CasualsMonash
TAs to mark (and cross-mark) it for free.

@NTEUVictoria
Few familiar faces in the crowd at
@NTEUUniMelb
strike this morning.
Insecure workers often work across multiple institutions to make ends meet.
The corporate university is broken. Our fight is sector-wide.
@CasualsMonash
@NTEUVictoria
Wage theft & casualisation are systemic problems, having cost the sector upwards of $100mill.
Yet the most egregious impact is the human cost - debt, the inability to plan for your future, the disconnect between perception and reality of an academic career, the lack of dignity.
These are some of the university workers who spoke to me about what it’s like to work in a sector with extraordinary levels of job insecurity and wage theft. Hard thing to speak out with so little job security
UPDATE: CHANGE OF VENUE FOR STRIKE & RALLY TOMORROW TO CLAYTON CAMPUS
University Council meeting has been moved back onto Clayton campus - so too will our industrial action.
Meet outside the Chancellery Building on the Clayton Campus at 12pm.
We can't let
@NTEUUniMelb

@NTEUSwinburne
or
@NTEU_RMIT

Monash members are going on a half-day strike next Wednesday, 6 Sept to rally outside Uni Council meeting in CBD!
From 1 - 5 May, universities across the country will take action for better workplaces and better unis!
Everyone working in higher education deserves fair pay, job security, and a safe workload.
We can't do this alone, join us and lets make our voices heard!
#BetterUnisNWA
Our Vice Chancellor
@GardmarM
earns roughly as much as
@AlboMP
, Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden's salaries combined.
But
@MonashUni
is *shocked* that NTEU members want to be paid for all hours spent marking.
Come to our stop-work rally and mtg - 10.30am Tues 16 May, Menzies Lawn.
@kateeuph
spoke to The Age yesterday about wage theft in our sector. Today, the NTEU released a report detailing that over $80million has been back paid in Australia since 2020. Systemic problems need systemic solutions.
Yesterday, we presented our proposal for 80% secure work during
@MonashUni
enterprise bargaining. Not casual, not periodic, and not fixed term. Secure, ongoing employment for 80% of all staff by Dec 2024.
So good to see students supporting our industrial action at Monash! 💜💜💜
Staff working conditions are student learning conditions. Together, we're fighting for a better Monash.
#NTEUstudentsolidarity
#BetterUnisNWA
@NTEUnion
Day 2 of the 24 hour strike was a powerful one!
Members turned up early to picket the Bus Terminal to let students know that we're striking for our working conditions which are ultimately their learning conditions!
It's us and them against management ✊
#MonashStrike
After we filed in Federal Court over wage theft,
@MonashUni
announced they were taking us to Fair Work for raising the dispute.
Come to the
@CasualsMonash
rally 12-1pm next Thursday, 6 October on the Ceremonial Lawn (outside Campus Centre) and show mgmt we won't be silenced.
🧵2-HR STOP-WORK, 8 JUNE...
We are calling on all NTEU Monash members to stop work tomorrow, 8 June, 12.00-2.00pm.
It's the next step in our campaign for higher wages, better job security and reasonable workloads.
We'll be gathering outside the Matheson Library...
A huge shout out to everyone today who came to our rally against wage theft.
Shame on
@MonashUni
for lawyer-ing up to fight their own staff in the Fair Work Commission and the Federal Court instead of paying them for work they're already doing.

“The $50 a week may not be much to people on six or seven-figure salaries, but for many of us, it’s the difference between making rent or not, going to the doctors or not. It’s the difference between two-minute noodles and a proper meal.”
Time to pay up.
Disgraceful move by
@Deakin
.
After harrowing restructures and dogged attempts to avoid paying back stolen wages, they're now attempting to circumvent bargaining by pushing a non-union Agreement on staff.
Don't accept their dodgy offer - vote no in the Deakin non-union ballot.
Mgmt are attempting to push through a non-union agreement. It’s time to say NO!
Deakin folk, talk to your colleages today about rejecting this offer, register to help with the No campaign and join the all members on Monday.
On Friday, Monash NTEU casuals met with
@MonashUni
HR to discuss the ongoing wage theft around student consultations for the first time since our letter of demand. Branch President

@MonashUni
filed in Fair Work to retrospectively vary the exact clause in our EA that:
a) they have systematically breached &
b) we are taking them to Court over.
This was on the SAME DAY they announced we'd begin bargaining, because the agreement they want to vary has expired.
We go on our 48-hour strike in just under two hours time to fight for fair pay, safe workloads and secure jobs ✊️

The Monash Branch of the NTEU condemns the use of targeted and indiscriminate violence against all civilians and repeat the calls for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as an immediate end to the siege of Gaza.
Today’s Stop-Work Rally and Meeting!
@MonashUni
staff and students standing together in the struggle for a better University for all.
Special shout-out to Professional Staff on Education Support Personnel Day.
We demand better.
Rampant insecurity, unmanageable workloads and wage theft are familiar to anyone who works in higher ed. Enough is enough. Universities must be held to account.
This is why, starting next Monday, NTEU Monash members will be commencing industrial action.
Full-day strike for union members at Monash! Meeting tomorrow 12pm on the steps of Trades Hall.
We can't afford to wait for more management delays - we need a new Agreement now!
(And don't forget to set your out of office replies 😉)
#BetterUnisNWA
While staff are fighting tooth and nail for secure jobs, secure wages and secure working hours,
@MonashUni
spent $127k on a farewell party for the VC with Kate Ceberano as entertainment.
Tomorrow, we strike.
We strike for our enterprise agreement and to deny management’s fantasies of a university without our rights and conditions.
12.30pm cnr Wakefield and John streets. Will you join us? Bring your colleagues, your comrades, your friends!

“This is nothing short of a governance failure.”
We’re striking for secure jobs, fair pay, & safe workloads. Join us on the picket at 12.30pm tomorrow outside Chancellery.
@NTEUVictoria
Hey
@MonashUni
, on a totally unrelated note, would $8.6mill in underpayment paid back in 2021 or, say, changing wording in an Enterprise Agreement to avoid further wage theft bills also be considered red flags? 🚩
Asking for a friend. 😇
1 week to go until
@MonashUni
union members walk off the job for 48 hours!
Check out for all your strike resources, including FAQs, posters, flyers & advice on how to communicate with students and colleagues.
See you on the picket!
Watch branch committee member Jed explain our latest huge win at the Fair Work Commission:
"Monash University will do anything to get out of paying casuals a fair wage" 👇
In 14 hours we will be going on our longest strike in over a decade! See you on the picket line ✊️✊️
Currently in bargaining meeting
#4
and
@MonashUni
management confirmed our casual rep will not be given time release between semesters.
Yet another example of sessional staff being treated as second rate.
@NTEUVictoria
1/ Starting from 9am on Monday, NTEU members at Monash can make statements while working explaining why members of the Union are taking industrial action.
This includes making statements in meetings, in classes, or in emails.
We support the right of our students to protest. In a dark time, they are campaigning for peace and freedom.
The right to free expression should include the right to make political statements about international affairs.
Monash NTEU member and
@CasualsMonash
veteran James Kent talks about the pedagogical importance of 1:1 consultation with students, and why
@MonashUni
should start paying staff for the work they do.
#Wagetheft
is not an accident, it's a business model.

@NTEUVictoria
In a survey of 1000+ staff
@MonashUni
82% were actively considering leaving or would leave if they got a better offer.
Only 3.7% felt staff had been adequately recognised for work during pandemic.
Our sector is in crisis, the corporate Uni is broken.
#betterunis
@NTEUVictoria
Today I spoke in the Senate about the plight of higher education workers. Specifically, about staff at Southern Cross University and the survey organised by
@NTEUnion
which revealed an extremely unsafe workplace.
The current conflict has killed thousands of students, teachers and university administrators. All the universities in Gaza have been destroyed. This violence must be halted.
Hey
@MonashUni
, we still need secure jobs!
Join us on the picket:
- Wed 20 March from midday outside Chancellery, &
-Thur 21 March from 8.30am outside the Bus Terminal.

Let's goooooo!
Branch President
@beneltham
speaks more on the outcome of the FWC hearing, and disappointment at
@MonashUni
for not only refusing to budge, but for retaliating against our members by dragging them through Fair Work instead of just paying them for work they already do.
We talked to 50 members and collectively we overwork 2800 hours a month!
Our 40/40/20 colleagues find it particularly hard to balance ⬆️ teaching demands with ⬆️ research demands and ⬆️ admin demands (thanks to the unis treatment of professional staff).

You might be wondering what the hell enterprise bargaining is and why (hopefully) everyone is talking about it.
Well, you're in luck!
NTEU members at
@MonashUni
have started a podcast called "My Union Wrote an EBA".
And that’s a wrap for Day 1 of
#monashstrikes
!
Tomorrow morning we kick off with a picket of the LTB at Clayton at 8.30am, followed by Radical Rest for World Mental Health Day at 10.30am, and a spicy lineup for our teach-in outside Menzies from 11.30am.
Full schedule below!
We endorse the statement made today by the Monash Student Association reiterating the right of students to protest and calling on the University to support students protesting and to ensure our campus remains safe.
Will
@MonashUni
management come to the table with a genuine proposal for secure jobs by tomorrow, or will our members be forced to continue with a 4 hour strike and rally outside Wednesday's Uni Council meeting?
@ProfSueElliott
?
We’re voting YES for the right to take protected industrial action at
@MonashUni
because we want an end to systemic wage theft, chronic insecurity and unreasonable workloads.
Some great photos from Day Two of the 48-hour strike, taken by our fantastic comrade and Branch Committee member Tony ✊
See you all on the picket line at Caulfield from 8:30am tomorrow morning!
#MonashStrikes
Today marks 250 days since our Enterprise Agreement expired, and only 7 days until our Protected Action Ballot opens.
Make sure you vote "YES" to all 9 actions to give NTEU Monash members the right to take protected industrial action.
Get ready!
Tomorrow we're going on strike again because, after almost 18 months of bargaining, Monash university management refuses to meet our core demands of:
- Fair pay rise
- Safe workloads
- Secure jobs
Join us in our fight and don't cross our picket line! ✊️
@NTEUMonash
HUGE shoutout to all the casuals who made submissions opposing the variation, provided evidence, witness statements, met with management, appeared in the Commission, & campaigned their hearts out for this result.
It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. 💪
A major win for our union & workers as the FWC rejects Monash's case.
The uni applied to retrospectively change the enterprise agreement in an attempt to avoid a wage theft claim of at least $9M.

The NTEU Monash branch, the staff union at Monash University, is disappointed with the appointment of Margaret Gardner as Victorian Governor. We note that Professor Gardner presided over more than $8.6m in wage theft while Vice-Chancellor of the University
