Combat athletes are uniquely at risk for energy deficiency due to weight class/competition rules and repeated bouts of weight cycling. Great work highlighting the importance of maintaining nutrition for health and performance in this population!
’A great article from Nicole Strock PhD (ABD), Theresa Cwenar & Maddie Holmberg, Mary Jane De Souza PhD. Read it on our website. https://t.co/MhwirSW6qa

Twice today, in separate and unrelated references, I’ve read that RED-S has replaced the Female Athlete Triad. More accurately, the Triad model forms the evidence-based framework upon which RED-S expands; both of which highlight the importance of avoiding energy deficiency.
@emilykrausmd @DrJohnKiel @TheAMSSM Dr. Kraus is entirely correct, in that RED-S does not replace the Female Athlete Triad. Indeed, the Female Athlete Triad is and remains the cornerstone for all energetic (metabolic), reproductive, bone health consequences of under-fueling in female athletes.

Great job by @nicstrock highlighting the importance of seeking out resources to educate yourself about the #femaleathletetriad
Nicole Strock has a Masters Degree in Physiology, and is a getting ready to defend her PhD in Kinesiology, both from Penn State. She’s a former Division I cross country/track and field athlete and has firsthand experience with physiological consequences of #TheFemaleAthleteTriad.
