Stating that #naloxone doesn't work on cocaine or benzos is correct but misses the point about polydrug use in Scotland. 89% of the deaths in 2020 involved opioids. 93% involved more than one drug. Always suspect opioids are involved and administer naloxone.

Every 1 of the 1330 people who died from a drug-related death in 2021 were someone's son or daughter. A large number will also have been parents, leaving behind bereaved children. We cannot underestimate the generational impact that this crisis continues to impose #stopthedeaths

A word on naloxone if I may. It has been the case for many years that over half the no. of people who die from an overdose in Scotland are with others at the time of their death. Hence the importance of wide spread availability of naloxone to people most likely to be there.

Reminder: #naloxone does not reverse the effect of benzodiazepines but it’s highly possible that if someone has overdosed they could also have taken opiates. If the person is unresponsive, administer it. It won’t do any harm and it could save someone’s life.

IMPORTANT! You can’t confirm what drugs someone has taken just by looking at them when they’ve overdosed. Administer #naloxone without question. You won’t do any harm if the person hasn’t taken opiates but you might just save their life.

Questioning naloxone as a moral hazard. Questioning ‘what else’ naloxone does (ie leading to reduced drug use etc). When will we accept that naloxone is an emergency medicine that stops people from dying? I don’t see other emergency treatments under such constant scrutiny.

I've been involved with naloxone supply since 2006 and have had to deal with BS concerns about how supplying it will lead increased use/more overdoses every bloody year since. It hasn't, it doesn't and it won't. What it will do is save lives.
