This is my biggest gripe with youth leagues. Too much caring about W/Ls, too many brackets where winning matters, too much emphasis on state tournaments and not enough time spent on skill development and just playing.
I had a meeting with @movementcoachkm of Ireland a few months back. I learned a lot. But one thing that FASCINATED me was that in many European youth leagues, they don’t really keep track of wins and losses like that. They instead focus on *developing* 13-year olds. Imagine.

There’s an epidemic of specialization happening in youth sports. If you want your athlete to have a long career in ANY sport, y’all need to let them go play something else for a minute. Volleyball. Soccer. Lacrosse. Curling. Track. Bean-bag toss. An instrument. Whatever. Play!

Youth basketball thought Practice design matters a lot Are you creating practices that kids want to come back to? If heavy on drills & light on games, that answer might be NO At youth ages, kids signing up for basketball the next year is a WIN, not necessarily winning 🏆
