Really glad that all of the Japan Airlines pax and crew seem to have survived the crash.
But I'm not surprised to hear that it was an orderly evacuation. JAL is able to board widebody aircraft in 10-15 mins as pax are so considerate.
Also JAL plays this every safety briefing:
@MeatBun_33
Seriously. The video is masterfully put together, showing both the wrong and right ways to evacuate the aircraft. Incredibly memorable - which is why I remembered to have my phone ready to record it!
New:
@AmericanAir
just unveiled its new Flagship Suite - including doors!
Seats will be installed on all Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 deliveries starting in 2024. Plus, the 777-300 will be retrofit with these new seats starting in late 2024.
Also, new premium economy seats!
This is so embarrassing
@AmericanAir
. The signs make it clear that you knew that these seats were broken, yet you're choosing fly paying passengers in them while having non-revs and an empty seat in first class.
Reaffirms my decision to switch away from this shitty ass airline.
Today I got to fly with the world's oldest flight attendant,
@AmericanAir
's Bette Nash! After more than 61 years in the sky, she's still flying 3x trips a week. And, she's an absolute gem:
It's finally happening! After wanting to fly this product for years (but waiting to do so until we could get the full experience), we are finally flying
@AmericanAir
Flagship First Class on the 777-300ER! Snagged seats 1A and 2A too!
First time I've seen such a baggage truck. And I'm obsessed.
How is this not a thing everywhere? It seems so much more efficient than having a separate belt and carts.
Going through old files and found this gem. Funny how some things seem really out-of-date while others are evergreen.
Which one do you feel is still the most true? The most out-of-date?
Happy to announce that I'm taking over as the
@awardwallet
Editor-In-Chief starting today!
Here's an update on what to expect from the blog, how to get notifications, our comment policy, how to write for AwardWallet, and tools the team has been working on:
I'm thrilled to share I have joined the
@AwardWallet
team as an Assistant Editor and Senior Contributor!
I'll be helping with the editorial side of the site while working on special projects to help travelers maximize their spend and redemptions.
Flights are full and overhead bins are full. So, please be considerate and don't be this guy - who's carrying on two full-size bags.
Technically that Farpoint 55 alone exceeds Southwest carry-on size limits with the zip-off daypack still attached like that.
This week,
@americanair
changed its Conditions of Carriage. These changes strip away rights travelers may expect when flying AA.
Here's a thread of the changes:
1. AA disclaims any liability when "we (or our partners) cancel a flight or route"
@LaBonteLisa
Indeed it will be interesting to see what's uncovered. Seems it's either on the Coast Guard crew for accidentally lining up before clearance -- or ATC for accidentally clearing the Coast Guard aircraft.
Looking forward to seeing what lessons aviation will learn from this one.
On June 3,
@americanair
will start using buses from Allentown/Bethlehem, PA (ABE) and Atlantic City, NJ (ACY) airports to Philadelphia - instead of American Eagle planes.
Just like on its planes, AA busses will provide power and streaming entertainment - but Wi-Fi will be free.
How not to write a flight review: (1/2)
1. It's the author's first-ever international red-eye... although she's flown a non-existent red-eye from NYC to Austin 🤔…
It's official! I'm the first passenger to check-in (at the airport) for the inaugural of the world's longest flight
@SingaporeAir
SIN-EWR
#SQ22
. Even better, I traded my middle seat for an aisle seat. 🙌 Stay tuned to
@thepointsguy
for my write-ups and review.
Just over 2 years ago, I left my tax accounting career to write full-time for
@thepointsguy
. Since then, I've flown quite a bit. Specifically, in the last 24 months, I have flown:
- 569,041 miles (289,797 in economy)
- 1,293 hours
- 298 flights on 246 routes
- 43 airlines
That's a wrap on flying for 2023!
This year, I flew:
- 212,245 miles
- 122 flights
- 29 airlines
- 82 airports
- 32 countries
Most popular route: ATL-ORD, LAX-SEA (3x each)
Longest flight: MEL-DFW (8,994mi)
Shortest flight: PSG-WRG (30mi)

17.5 years ago today, two college kids made it "Facebook official" that they were dating.
Neither could ever imagine that they'd be traveling around Malaysia together as nomads and life partners 17.5 years later.
@katiegenter
and I are truly living our best lives together 🥰
American Airlines has yanked all inflight entertainment screens out of its 737 fleet, and it's almost done doing so on its (non-transcon) A321s.
So, it's pretty misleading that all
@americanair
media images of domestic economy seats still include inflight entertainment screens🤔
A man started yelling and tried to storm the cockpit of our LOT Polish flight just after landing in JFK. Crew acted quickly to tackle him and announced a "seriously security incident" 15 mins later we are still taxiing.
This week,
@katieGenter
and I got quite an upgrade at the Rio Las Vegas!
The Rio was sold out for a Star Trek convention, and I couldn't check in online for our reservation. So, I suspected we were either being walked...or upgraded.
We ended up with a 3-story Penthouse Suite 😱
Welcome home B1051! This booster has successfully flown 8 different missions to space and has safely landed each time!
There was quite a crowd out at the Jetty Park and Port Canaveral to great this record-smashing
#SpaceX
booster.
Thanks to
@SpaceXFleet
for tracking the return!
Ummm. An
@AmericanAir
gate agent just tried to earn a little bonus.
Agent shut down seat selection but ExpertFlyer shows exit row seats are blocked.
Agent said those are only available for purchase. I pointed out that I'm a Platinum Pro and she said I'd still have to pay cash👀
Now *this* is the way to do
@Uber
airport pickups: enter your destination, get a code, and grab the next-available ride in your car class.
It's the convenience of a taxi stand with all of the benefits of Uber: known pricing, accountability through reviews, post-ride support, etc
Whoa!
@AmericanAir
and Philippines Airlines just announced a new codeshare partnership.
That means you'll be able to fly from NYC/LA/SanFran to Manila on "American Airlines" flights - earning miles and Loyalty Points as if you were flying on American.
3 years ago today, my accounting firm completed our last tax return of the fall tax season. I asked my boss if I could take a hiatus to catch up on writing articles for
@thepointsguy
. He figured that'd be a great idea and said he'd see me in January. I haven't been back since.
Oh fun!
@Avis
Seattle is doing the fuel scam too. We returned our car full but the receipt shows 7/8 and we were fraudulently charged $20.
Remember to always take photos and check your receipts. This seems to especially be an Avis problem.
"We've been cleared for takeoff. Make sure you're seatbelts are on tight. The captain informed me he wants to try something different." -
@SouthwestAir
flight attendant.
*Frantic buckle sounds*
Oh man I LUV flying Southwest 😂
Huge shoutout to all of the medical professionals that respond to that dreaded call of “Is there a doctor onboard?”
On our flight today, a woman fell unconscious and medical professionals helped revive her - with the help of
@British_Airways
' well-supplied onboard medical kit.
Not only did Katie and I lose our empty middle seat to the last guy to board, but of course he's an anti-masker.
@SouthwestAir
flight attendant has reminded him multiple times and is telling him security will meet him at the gate in Denver if he continues to refuse.
Flying in first class on a 2-hour flight within North America:
🙅♂️No lounge access
❌Probably no seatback entertainment
🍪Snack basket if you're lucky
Flying in economy within Asia for 2 hours:
🛋️Lounges for elites
📺In-flight entertainment screens
🍲Hot meal
💁♀️Friendly service
The year is 2032. We finally have flying cars. Boom is still touting its zero-carbon supersonic planes but still hasn't built one. Emirates is the only airline still flying the A380. The 747 is just a memory.
And the British Airways Executive Club is still down for maintenance.
Seems like
@americanair
is gearing up to make a no-notice devaluation.
AA just changed its AAdvantage T&C to specifically state that it won't necessarily provide advance notice of changes.
Totally something a company does out of the blue and without anything planned 🙃
17 years and 4 days ago,
@katieGenter
agreed to be my girlfriend. 4 years and 4 days later, she said "I do" to becoming my wife.
Happy 13th anniversary to my incredible life partner. And I'm looking forward to so many more years exploring the world with you.
Aaah! Bette Nash just called me to say how much she loved the piece I did on her! All I could say is what I truly feel: it's an honor to be able to share her story and how incredible she is. ICYMI:
Sipping Johnnie Walker Blue Label after an excellent breakfast of Steak, Eggs, Frites at JFK Flagship First Dining while AvGeeking at the planes going by outside. Not sure it gets much better than this on American!
The World Health Organization has announced that dogs cannot contract Covid-19. Dogs previously held in quarantine can now be released. To be clear, WHO let the dogs out.
Dear cities: Please stop pricing public transportation to/from the airport at such a premium that it makes more sense to take an Uber.
Today's example: It's just a 12-minute €18.99 Uber to our Barcelona hotel vs. 40-minute bus journey costing €14.50 😕
Slowly but surely,
@AmericanAir
has been adding "real food" to its Admirals Clubs. Tonight at LAX: mac and cheese, make-your-own chicken salad, and guacamole and chips 😋
Today, Katie and I are flying
@AlaskaAir
Flight 65 - one of Alaska's famous Milk Run flights!
Between today and Sunday, we will fly through *almost* every airport of the Milk Run, only missing Sitka.
For more about the Milk Run, here's my full guide:
The
@British_Airways
Executive Club is still down - stretching into the 6th day being offline. It's now more than 24 hours after it was originally supposed to "be back up and running".
Although, to be fair, BA never said which year it would be back up by November 17😏
At the
@ThaiAirways
headquarters in Bangkok, you can eat airline food in real airplane seats!
Naturally,
@katieGenter
and I had to check it out while we were in town.
14 years ago today, two kids in their early 20s said "I do" to a life together.
They could only imagine where they'd go by taking adventures together and saying yes to opportunities - ending up in China for their 14th anniversary.
And we can't wait to see where we go from here!
This is the shit that has me glad I'm abandoning my
@AmericanAir
status this year.
The agent should have cleared Katie into first class, but a passenger was added to the upgrade list and immediately cleared - despite check-in supposedly being closed 🙃
Just booked the Alaska Milk Run! 😁
Flying through almost every airport along the way: SEA-KTN-WRG-PSG-JNU-YAK-CDV-ANC -- with a multi-night stopover in Juneau. Looking forward to finally doing this
#AvGeek
experience!
For tips on how to book it yourself:
Holy throwback! Turns out
@AmericanAir
is still flying some ancient beat-down US Airways A320 aircraft.
And it looks like this plane hasn't gotten any attention since the merger!

While I was grabbing a bite to eat in the Denver Centurion Lounge, I was astounded to see a Boeing VC-25 out the window!
Sure enough, President Biden was onboard - making it Air Force One!
Sadly the tinted windows made it hard to get a good shot. So, this is as good as I got:
Now four years on, I can't express how much these comments got me through a really dark time as I reeled from being tossed out of a publication that I'd poured everything into for 4.5 years, then the pandemic shutting down my nomadic travels.
I've never been in a better place…
Today, Doug Parker is retiring as CEO of
@AmericanAir
. He will be remembered by flyers for making lots of cost-cutting moves and by investors for underperforming competitors. But, at least he was nice to me when we met 🤷♂️
Happy retirement Doug!
In my searches, I've found that
@qatarairways
is stingy about releasing business class award availability to Maldives.
Well, they might be regretting this strategy. Our Qatar flight to the Maldives departs in two hours and there are 47 empty business class seats out of 53 total.
The passengers in my row on my last flight:
1. Took my window seat before I boarded
2. Grumbled about having to move out of my seat.
3. Reached over me to shoot photos and videos out my window throughout the flight
4. Carried on EIGHT bags - including shipping bags, cameras, etc.
ICYMI: My dermatologist has caught and operated to remove two melanomas in the past 1.5 years.
Today was my ~6 month checkup since my last surgery. Relieved to report that there are no signs of spread, the scar is healing well, and no new biopsies were needed 🙌
Staking out a spot in the
@qantas
first class lounge paid off! Got some nice shots of VH-OJU as she was pulled around from her parking spot to the gate for

Is
@united
"Channel 9" dead?
United includes "from the flight deck" as part of its in-flight entertainment screen. But, it was silent.
The FA on my flight checked with the pilots. The captain told him that they can no longer share air traffic control communication with pax.
I feel like Holiday Inn Express doesn't get enough credit for being a practical yet comfortable brand. Our hotel tonight is just minutes from DFW (w free shuttle), solid breakfast and our room has 16 available power outlets (2 universal) plus 6 USB plugs. All for under $100. 👏
On our first morning ever in the Maldives, we were recognized by a fellow guest.
He said he almost didn't say anything because he didn't want to bother us - which I appreciate.
But, if you see me somewhere, don't hesitate to say hi. I'm always thrilled to meet fellow travelers!
I'm a sucker for a retro livery *and* a pilot making welcome announcements from the front of the cabin. So this
@united
flight is off to a great start! 😍
Consider renting a Tesla through
@Hertz
? You might want to think twice before charging the rental to a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.
That's because
@Chase
considers Telsas either "high value motor vehicles or exotic car brands not covered" by rental collision damage coverage:
News: American Airlines just announced new amenity kits, bedding kits, premium meals, and even a new Flagship First Suite to go at the front of new Boeing 787-9 and retrofitted 777-300 aircraft 😍

When I worked full-time in tax accounting, I tried to plan a far-away getaway right after the April 15 deadline (South Africa, Kuala Lumpur, etc.)
This year, we stumbled into doing the same. The deadline was pushed to April 18 this year and now we are headed to India!
Goodbye CLT Admirals Club C/D and thanks for the memories 🥲
Tonight, this lounge will be shuttered for (at least) a 6-month remodel. That surely means the end of the lounge's classic US Airways look.
Them: IHG points are worthless!
Me: idk. How about booking a 4-night stay at the InterContinenal New York Times Square for ~25k points per night after the fourth night free? 🤷♂️
Purchase IHG points at 0.5 cents each, and that's $126/night (before the stupid $35 amenity fee).
Today marks 6 months since I was terminated from TPG. I'd poured everything I had into TPG for 4.5 years, even having left my career in tax accounting to pursue my passion.
Suddenly, I found myself starting over from scratch - as a pandemic wrecked the economics of the industry.
My birthday wish will come early this year!
@katieGenter
and I got our second COVID vaccine dose today! 🎉🎉
That means we will be fully vaccinated on April 22 - just 3 days before my birthday! 😄
Oh Japan! It's been 2.5 years too long since we've been able to visit you.
@katieGenter
and I couldn't be happier to be back visiting your wonderful temples, exploring your fascinating culture, and eating your delicious ramen 😋
Stay tuned for the details of how we got in!
Just finished living in a suite at the Grand Hyatt Bali for a week. Breakfast and snacks/drinks included thanks to Katie's Globalist status.
Cost: 35,000 Hyatt points + 1 Suite Upgrade Award (total for 7 nights)
Pretty awesome way to spend a week!
Comparing amounts paid so far for airport train rides (to/from city center) in descending cost:
- Kuala Lumpur: $11.27
- Brussels: $11.03
- New York: $10.75
- Amsterdam: $6.27
- Helsinki: $4.38
- Atlanta: $2.50
The MARTA experience isn't great, but at least it's a reasonable cost
@UberFacts
Technically, it wouldn't be gift tax. Gift tax is charged to a person giving a taxable gift (over the annual exclusion amount). The gift was likely reported to the audience members as miscellaneous income, likely on a Form 1099-MISC.
Santa is real folks. Katie and I lucked into a new
@AmericanAir
Boeing 787-8 with the improved Super Diamond seats for our flight to Tokyo tonight 😄
So much better than the "shaky shake" Concept D seats on the old 787-8s.
Well that's a first for me. Our flight touched down so hard on landing that an overhead bin popped open.
Also with how high we bounced the landing, I'm surprised the pilots didn't initiate a go-around. But thankfully we are all safe on the ground now!
Almost exactly 5 years ago, I had the pleasure of flying with the world's oldest flight attendant: Bette Nash. As I highlighted in my feature, she's an incredible lady:
Unfortunately, I've gotten word that Bette is in hospice with stage 4 bone cancer 😢
When
@katieGenter
and I first started dating, I set a monthly reminder so I could celebrate every month that I was lucky enough to be with her.
Today, we mark 200 months since making it "Facebook official" that we were dating.
Pretty excited about today 😄 Checking out
@AmericanAir
's new JFK first class check-in desk and Chelsea Lounge for the first time!
Then after my first time at Flagship First Dining in DFW, I fly my second flight on my white whale: Flagship First Class on the 777W. Not a bad day!
Airlines typically use flight
#1
for their most prestigious flight. Yesterday, Katie and I flew American Airlines flight AA1 from JFK-LAX.
That's my third flight
#1
: Malaysia MH1 from LHR-KUL and Breeze inaugural MX1 from TPA-CHS.
Have you flown an airline's flight
#1
before?
