This is also a stunning mentor for procedural texts. I had the opportunity to read it in the classroom and kids were so engaged with its poetic, interactive nature! #PitMad #KidLit #OWN #BVM
HOW TO BIRD* inspires readers to look & listen for birds everywhere. Detailed photo-collages of Black & brown faces & city spaces confirm: BIRDING IS FOR US! *bird - to notice & observe wild birds in their habitats. #PitMad #BVM #PB #NF #C #STEM #ND #DIS #KidLit #BlackJoy #OWN

Reading that first line again!
A8: Independent does not have to mean "by yourself." Independent reading includes reading with a friend or with friends. It includes lots of talking, and teacher support, in the form of conferring. #G2Great

A8--not silencing talk during independent reading time! allowing for partner work outside of designated times! everyone gets what they need, and silent-to-self reading is not what everyone needs. #G2great

A7 Honoring many ways it looks and sounds to read. Moving while reading, reading out loud, reading silently, reading while sketching, being able to talk about book while reading. Also remembering the "One Way" is determined by someone in power and not for all. #G2great

A6: Framing some texts as ârealâ is inherently tied to issues of power. Who labels a text as real and for what purpose? What opportunities do students have to name a text as real, meaningful, validating? #G2great

A6 Makes me think of "That's not real reading" that we hear from emerging readers+their caregivers. Many kinds of reading and many types of texts can be messaged from K on. We love taking walks in room, in neighborhood, in museums, and finding all the things to read #G2great

(A5) Quality vs quantity as a trait of white supremacy is fascinating. Makes me think, âWhy the rush?â âWhy donât they - whoever âthey' would be in this context - want my students to have the time to deep dive into this idea?â "Whatâs so dangerous about it?â #G2Great
A5: Oh GOSH. These last few weeks I have panicked that there is not enough evidence, so I started pushing and stressing the kids to write more. I gave my head a shake this week and have repeated over and over out loud. Quality is better than Quantity. Take your time. #g2great

A5 Thatâs challenging given that our education system is rooted in the idea of quality over quality so itâs not just an individual issue but a systemic one. It doesnât help that those systems perpetuate the more is better myth that sacrifices depth. #G2Great

A5: I think of writing workshop. Some Ss write a lot, really fast. Some Ss write one piece for a really long time. We need to honor all the ways that Ss understand Quality. #G2Great

so important to grow a culture of colleagues offering and seeking feedback.
(A4) Itâs a little easier when we dont JUST get critiqued after a larger screw-up. If we have a steady habit of getting feedback from honest colleagues that we trust - hearing that another thing we did was a bit off is less of a shock. Hey we messed up last week too⌠#G2Great

A 4 When I feel defensive I say, âyou make a point I need to reflect on so letâs talk tomorrow.â I find having time to think about and process defensiveness helps me understand and process the challenge and then discuss it. #g2great

A4 Defensiveness is a hard trait we ALL need to address. It starts with awareness that I have been defensive and wonder if my reaction has been guilt driven. Now when I feel that way Iâm working hard to pause and reflect internally before I speak #G2Great

A3 I think defensiveness can be a reaction of feeling judged. So reminding myself that being questioned is not the same as being judged. It's a collaborative path to understanding and often growing. #G2great

Q3: For sâs, class has the âillusion of speedâ when itâs full of thinking - and that means building equitable structures where every student has plenty of time to write and think and speak - every day. Itâs not about racing, itâs about pacing. #G2Great

@trustingreaders @juliewright4444 This is what @JillDerosa and I refer to as shared ownership. Yes, we are all stakeholders in our learning. #G2Great

Try as hard as possible to not pass on urgency above you to the kids. If the adults are tripping over some nonsense, rushing us, etc - that doesnât mean we can't be bouncers and not let that foolisnes into our interactions w kids. Shoot. #G2Great
