Because mothers are expected to do it all. Traditionally they do the bulk of childcare and are often too exhausted to take on all of the extras in academic life that are associated with success.
Female academics are much more affected by the birth of a child than are male academics. Academic mothers are much more likely to... ◾temporarily leave the labor force ◾and, if they return, shift away from tenure-track positions.

Rates of Induction of Labor and Cesarean Birth for Low-Risk Nulliparous Women (NTSV) in the United States, 2016 to 2024 IOL for NTSV pts has increased 49% since 2016. Cesarean births haven't changed much; increased slightly.
