Me, breaking the news to my kid that I agreed to participate in her school’s upcoming career fair.
Kid, sipping drink & not even looking up from her screen: Wow, I’m sure there’s going to be a really long line at the historian booth.
I cover a lot of controversial topics in my writing, from racism to Christian nationalism to authoritarianism, but nothing draws fire like drawing attention to sexual abuse & coverups in white evangelical churches.
Nothing even comes close.
I'm not an SBC insider by any stretch, but one of the first things I did when I started to write JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE was consult a lawyer because I knew sexual abuse and cover-ups needed to be part of the story. How did I know? Because I'd been listening to women. 1/14
My daughter and I have been joking/not joking about moving to Sweden or Denmark. Just for fun, I picked up this book and we read bits aloud to each other in the evening.
This one was a gut punch.
This is such a beautifully reported story of a family venturing away from the world of conservative homeschooling and discovering that the world beyond is vastly different from what they’d been told.
So there's this thing on here where certain conservative evangelical men tweet *about* me, but when I respond directly, they ignore me. Every time.
Is this a digital Billy Graham rule?
Because I swear I'm not smiling at them.
Just heard from a pastor of an evangelical church in the Midwest. Their men's group started reading JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE, and by the 2nd week the group doubled in size & it seems on the cusp of producing a revival of sorts.
I didn't think I could love this any more, but...
It’s not just that the guy wrote those things, but another guy decided to publish it, & another guy thought it should be a book, & another guy said not just a book a MAGNUM OPUS & this is exactly what happens when you put a No Girls Allowed sign on your “gospel coalition.”
JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE,
#4
on the New York Times bestseller list!!
If you’re seeing this tweet, chances are you’ve tweeted about J&JW at some point over this past year.
You made this happen, and this is about so much more than the book. Words fail, but thank you.
I’ve said more than once that if you want a good look at the culture of white evangelicalism, just browse the aisles of your local Hobby Lobby. But this. I did not expect this. 😳
“After premiering on Amazon Prime Video with all four episodes on June 2, “Shiny Happy People” reached more viewers in its first nine days than any Amazon docuseries…
I don’t want to brag or anything but on a whim I bought my middle child a bar set and mocktail book & she’s been making me drinks all day and I think this qualifies as a genius parenting move.
@William_E_Wolfe
Which part, exactly? Getting paid a grand total of $0 for all the documentaries I’ve appeared in? The negligible effect on book sales? Or is it the fact that survivors are finding this film incredibly empowering? I love that part.
Wishing
@BethMooreLPM
all the best. This isn’t just a public statement, it entails all sorts of personal and professional costs. I know so many who are facing their own decisions of this sort. As usual, she leads with grace and courage.
Learned tonight that my kids’ school won’t be complying with our county public health mask mandate so finding a new school is now on tomorrow’s to-do list. So much wrong here.
So there seems to be a bit of confusion about JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE. It's a work of history. It's not a script, so some of you all can just stop playing the roles now, ok? 🤠
Same story, but less surprising this time around, and more dangerous. After 2016 I watched closely for any signs of remorse among evangelical voters, but saw none. Quite the opposite.
This time, they know exactly who they’re choosing.
So the Daily Wire has decided to feature J&JW and I'm so grateful that conservatives are against cancel culture except apparently the sizable number who are telling my university to fire me immediately so how is your Monday going?
I feel a little guilty b/c of all the free publicity my critics give me. Truth is, there are *dozens* of historical accounts that would rock evangelicals’ world if they bothered to read them.
In the sprit of generosity, then, if you hated J&JW, you’ll really detest this one:
If announcing a new book is a little like announcing a new baby, I’ll throw in the gender reveal right up front: It’s a girl! Introducing...LIVE LAUGH LOVE. Thrilled to be working with
@dan_gerstle
and
@LiverightPub
again on this one. Think of it as J&JW, but for the girls.
When "the gospel" gets distorted into grasping for power, when men claim for themselves absolute authority and a host of other perogatives, when controling and then blaming women is the default mode, this is what you end up with. 4/
TFW the Christian school principal explains why they won’t require masks and won’t agree to comply with public health mandates and signs his email “In Christ’s service.”
There is an abbey where monks living under the rule of St Benedict read books during the silence of communal meals and recently their book of choice was JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE and all I can think about really is those chapter titles. 😳
Told my 12yo that
@RichardRohrOFM
prays for one good humiliation a day.
12yo: “I’m guessing Fr Richard Rohr isn’t in middle school. I’m going to go out on a limb and say he’s not in high school either.”
Guys, this book isn’t just bad, it’s bad at being bad. What is this, like 16 pt font? At 132 pp, it’s essentially a glorified pamphlet. Opened up to a random page and found a typo. What a brilliant scam.
In case anyone is wondering, I know exactly how this game is played. I literally wrote the book on it. In case it’s not obvious by now, I also refuse to play by those rules.
Judge the book on its merits. Treat those you disagree w/ with basic human dignity & respect.
I learned this week that JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE will be in airport bookstores when the paperback releases next month and very much looking forward to all the awkward “so what are you reading?” in-flight conversations that will ensue.
My son, calling a second time to complain about his sisters.
Me: OK, but remember I’m at a party right now, so I really need to go.
Him: If you’re at a party, why does it sound like a lecture in the background?
Me: It’s…a party w/ historians.
Him: Ah, got it. Ok bye.
Apparently the women were "jealous" and so now they've started their own reading group, too. I've seen a picture and it looks like all kinds of fun.
And so today, this is my favorite thing.
to switch but she declined. “He’s really cute, and his mom looks really tired, & she really is trying her best.” So little sister & I gave her our pillows to help cushion the blows. Eventually, he fell asleep.
The end.
Grateful to receive the Spoelhof chair at
@Calvin_Uni
, which will provide significant research release for the next 3 yrs. Deeply appreciative of Calvin's support & glad to work w/ fabulous students & colleagues in our mission to serve as agents of renewal in church & society.❤️
"Those lamenting evangelicals' apparent betrayal of 'family values' fail to recognize that ev family values have always entailed assumptions about sex & power...Within this framework, men assign themselves the role of protector, but the protection of women & girls is contingent..
Heard I got a bit of a shoutout on Ben Shapiro’s show today. Wasn’t really in the mood to tune in, so my husband volunteered to listen, filled me in on the highlights, & cooked dinner in the process.
#BiblicalManhood
Last night I met an undergrad who told me he was a first-generation college student from a working-class white community on the other side of the state. He said people from back home tend not to read many books, but they're all reading Jesus and John Wayne. 😭
...on their presumed purity & proper submission to masculine authority. This puts female victims in impossible situations. Caught up in authoritarian settings where a premium is placed on obeying men, women & children find themselves in situations ripe for abuse of power. 6/
I’ve noted this pattern for 2+ years now. What sickens me is that I know this is only a mild version of what survivors face in these spaces. And they don’t have platforms and often don’t have people who have their backs.
Yesterday while I was waiting outside my kids’ school for the afternoon pickup, a woman I’d never seen before walked up to me, glanced around furtively, and said in a low voice…”Are you Jesus and John Wayne?”
...or failing to call out friends doing so, what we'll see is more of the same. When corruption is this entrenched, institutionally, culturally, and theologically, change isn't going to happen b/c of a sudden "awareness." They've known all along. 14/14
Thing is, I'm part of a Reformed tradition that holds a high view of intellectual life and of Scripture. It means that we investigate orginal languages, historical context, and reject a narrow literalism for an interpretive framework that centers the redemptive work of Christ.
I'd hoped to keep this weekend free from Twitter battles, but when persistently called a wolf, a destroyer of the gospel, & other such things, I felt a need to respond.
Happy first Sunday of Advent.🕯️ Our sermon was on Jer. 33 and my pastor, who is very much not on Twitter, quoted Craig Barnes: "History has proven that the church is never more wrong than when it is certain it is right. Humility, not certainty, is one of the great virtues."
A history of evangelical conferences as a window onto evangelicalism writ large, with attention to $, race, gender, power, networks, theology.
Who wants to write this one? I’d read it in a heartbeat.
“Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — 'turn the other cheek' — [and] to have someone come up after to say, 'Where did you get those liberal talking points?'" Moore revealed.”
No mention of his faith, but there was this: "evangelicals...they feel so good about themselves and their family and they base it on religion..."
Kind of profound, really.
Here’s another annoying kid-on-an-airplane story:
Yesterday, not half an hour into an 8hr flight, my 14yo nudged me &whispered that the kid behind her wouldn’t stop kicking her seat. I glanced back & saw a little 2yo relentlessly kicking the tray table. I asked if she wanted…
Missed my 8yo’s school concert this week so I promised her a “mama night” when I got back. Woke up to her plan: 5pm change into PJs/robes. Order Chinese takeout w/ donuts. Play games (ones where she always trounces me). Watch her favorite movies. Stay up late.
That’ll teach me.
Thought experiment: What if the heart of Christian nationalism was the practice of Christian hospitality rather than the assertion/defense of Christians' rights?
I hated writing the chapter on abuse. Originally it was twice as long. (My editor called it "bloated & undisciplined.") But if you look closely it's not just a chapter. The whole book makes clear how abuse & coverup on this scale happens. 3/
I’ll admit I have a very hard time taking things like this seriously, but worth considering what Beth Moore & I have in common:
1. We’re blond
2. We’ve called out abuse in evangelical churches
3. We’ve called out racism in evangelicalism
1. Should be clear by now that I didn't write J&JW to win approval of a certain subset
2. I'm a Christian, I refuse to cede the right to define Chr to that crew or play by their rules
3. If I weren't Chr, my book still stands
4. Probably should've monetized that post somehow😂
Wondering where all this anti-CRT activism comes from? Christian nationalism and whitewashing our racial history has deep roots in historical accounts long pedaled by the Christian Right.
Kathleen Wellman tells this story in her new book, HIJACKING HISTORY.
@OUPAcademic
But this is nothing--absolutely nothing--compared to what survivors have endured, for years, decades even. At the hands of their own leaders. Their own communities. It is only because of their unrelenting quest for justice, at enormous personal cost, that we have this report. 12/
Yet victims are often held culpable for acts perpetrated against them...While men (and women) invested in defending patriarchal authority frequently come to the defense of perpetrators, victims are often pressured to forgive abusers and avoid involving law enforcement. 7/
Since we had to postpone our trip to Paris, I decided to take my daughter on a surprise trip to see true cultural treasures a little closer to home. Plus she can still practice her French.
Overheard my 8yo, to her friend who came over after school:
"Let's go outside to play, but first I want to show you something in The New Yorker."
I feel the need to apologize to someone.
I keep coming back to this. I’ve worked at a Christian institution for 18 yrs w/ mostly male colleagues. I’ve never once encountered a stray hand. Not once has someone complained to me about their unsatisfactory sex life. This isn’t impossible, guys. It’s not even hard.
Just stop.
And what is “the occasional stray hand”?
Seriously. Was there a guy walking around the office with hapless kittens on the ends of his wrists instead of ordinary human hands?
What the actual heck?
They were speaking to each other, sometimes they shared on blogs, amplified by allies. On occasion they testified in court or gave an interview to a reporter, usually regional not national. But these stories were available for anyone who cared to listen. Turns out most didn't. 2/
I spent the summer of 1994 in Ukraine, teaching American history & German drinking too much vodka & meeting generous, kind-hearted, and inquisitive students and professors.
Praying for my Ukrainian friends tonight. 💛💙
Decided to make the most of this last relatively quiet day before school starts up and tried a new recipe for dinner.
Was told by my 12yo, "You know, mom, if you just want to stick to book writing, we'll support you in that."
I've watched evangelical leaders come out swinging against CRT & feminism & "winsomeness" & fellow Christians who won't play their game, while staying silent on abuse or giving only the blandest expression of "lament" while doubling down on maintaining their own power. 10/
Wait until he hears that I’ve been known to give talks for atheists. And Catholics. And communists. And even, on occasion, for complementarians.
This persistent inability to understand at the most basic level how academics operate is embarrassing.
Jesus & John Smith?!
Author of book with the subtitle “How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith” presents at a . . . Mormon conference?
For those keeping score at home, Mormons don’t believe Jesus is equal to God. They believe he’s a created being. They are quite literally
Every day I get beautiful messages from readers. I love them all. Today I’m receiving an unusually high volume, nearly all from evangelical men (esp pastors) expressing gratitude & support.
I can’t help but ask: You guys have been coordinating this via group texts, haven’t you?
Will this bring change? Watch closely. If all we hear from those w/ power are bland expressions of "shock" & grief, w/out publicly confessing their own complicity, their willful silence, w/out remorse for ignoring or slandering survivors & their allies... 13/
JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE has been praised publicly by atheists, LGBTQ activists, Black Christians, complementarian women, survivors, conservative PCA pastors, ACNA priests, & revolutionary communists. I’m grateful to all who engage the work with integrity.
Relying on endorsements from vehemently anti-Christian LGBT activists seems relevant, no? But please, let’s continue to accept this book as a good faith critique of evangelicalism. 🙄
Shoutout to the kid on this flight who yelled “We are ALL in the air! Yay! That was awesome!” after takeoff, and then, after staying quiet all flight, cried out “We’re going down!” when we began our descent. 💀
I personally have been called a child of the devil, a wolf, a false teacher, placed outside the very bounds of Christianity for telling the stories that powerful evangelical leaders don't want to hear. I've been accused of lacking empathy for not empathizing w/ abusers. 11/
OK, let's do this again.
Butterfield: "Du Mez wants you to believe that politics is the primary reason conservatives embrace biblical inerrancy...not because we believe this honors God..."
No, Du Mez draws on hist studies demonstrating how "inerrancy" was selectively applied.1/
🔥 "Du Mez wants you to believe that politics is the primary reason that conservatives embrace biblical inerrancy. She apparently thinks that we interpret the Bible as inerrant not because we believe that this honors God or because the Bible reveals itself as inerrant and
So there I was, about to board my flight for ORD, when they announced a mechanical issue and several hours’ delay. So disappointed to miss my events at U of Chicago, & then I realized, w/ the time change I could make it if I drove & left *right then.*
Made it w/ 5 min to spare.
