Just laying out the quickest of scenarios:
If the Lions beat the Panthers next week AND
the Seahawks lose on the road to the Chiefs AND
the Commanders lose on the road to the 49ers
The Lions would climb into the final playoff spot in the NFC just in time for Christmas.
Dan Campbell said he was honest with the locker room this might have been their only shot. He doesn't believe that, he doesn't think that, but it's the reality of the NFL. Said it will be twice as difficult next year.
Former Ravens Pro-Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler intends to sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, per source. Zeitler is flying to Detroit tonight to take a physical with the plan to sign Tuesday with the Lions.
Jared Goff closes his press conference saying he wasn't asked, but he wanted to make sure Aaron Glenn gets the credit he deserves for what the Lions accomplished today.
Detroit is making another addition to the coaching staff, and I think you guys are going to love this one. Former Lions Pro Bowler Dre' Bly will be coaching the cornerbacks.
San Francisco basically shut out Green Bay fans last week, but according to data collected by
@VividSeats
, Lions fans are trending toward making up close to 20% of the crowd for the NFC championship.
Well, Jameson Williams' suspension has been lifted as part of a new agreement between the league and player's union on gambling policy. He can play as soon as this week.
Reflecting on his draft experience, Amon-Ra St. Brown said Detroit was the one team he didn't want to draft him. Now, said it was the best thing that could have happened, not sure he would have excelled like this anywhere else. Said if he could do it again, he'd pay to come here.
Dan Campbell said Lions still feel like hunter vs. hunted. Says if you're hunting us, you won't have to look far, we'll be on your front porch when you open the door.
Confirming Duce Staley is leaving for Carolina. It's still unclear what his role will be with the Panthers, but OC is in play. Lions let him go to be closer to his mother, who is dealing with some health issues.
Some pretty cool
#Lions
news. For months, NFL Films have been following around wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for what I've been told by multiple sources is an unannounced sequel to the Netflix docuseries: "Quarterback"
"I love you guys so fucking much. This is just the beginning, boys. This is just the fucking beginning. We've go three more of these motherfuckers. Next week, at home, at our place, against whoever the fuck wants to come in here." - Jared Goff, postgame speech
Remember that moment on "Hard Knocks" where linebacker coach Kelvin Sheppard was criticizing all the vets for a sixth-round rookie doing his job better than everyone else? I'm starting to think it might be true of the entire defense, not just the linebacker room.
The tough thing about holding your new uniforms for an unveiling is keeping all the third-party corporate partners in line with the launch, when there's so little oversight with those. Fanatics ad leaked through USA Today Network, appearing to show Lions' new look jerseys.
Dan Campbell said he was out in Grand Rapids for one of his daughter's volleyball tournaments. Said he interacted with a lot of fans and got a "Don't forget about us" impression. Said he's had some thoughts about taking a portion of training camp on the road to the west side.
Not the postgame story I expected or wanted to write. Alex Anzalone's parents are stuck in Israel as part of a church tour group as conflict rages in that region. He explains some of the details: 'It's hard. (It's) really all I’ve been thinking about."
Bengals coach Zac Taylor said he's tried to hire Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson many, many, many times, but he keeps getting promoted and blocked. Taylor calls Johnson one of the brightest young coaches in the league.
Alex Anzalone has penned a pretty extensive piece for "The Player's Tribune" recapping the end of the season, the fourth-down calls, all while interweaving some personal experiences on the home front:
Matt Patricia has arrived at the announced time of his press conference once this year. I've never seen any pro or college coach struggle with punctuality anywhere near this degree.
Lions draw Brad Rogers' officiating crew this Sunday. Last time he officiated a Lions/Packers game, Lions won, 35-11 in 2017. The most recent Lions game he officiated was Detroit's win over the New York Giants this season.
Detroit had the second-highest rating of any market for last Sunday's Super Bowl, just barely behind Cincinnati.
Detroit pulled a 45.9 share. Cincinnati was at 46.1.
Landed in SF, flight plays a recording of "Forward Down the Field" over the intercom as we near the gate, people sing along, new decibel record set for this plane.
Every time Jared Goff has thrown an interception this year, he's lead the offense for a touchdown on an ensuing drive. I wrote this week that I think his ability to bounce back after a mistake has been his defining ability to start this season.
Two dudes wearing only boxers, with tall boys in hand, are shouting "Go Lions" at the top of their lungs from the open window of their hotel room.
Kickoff isn't for another nine hours or so.
Guys, the No. 2 seed is in play however long the odds may seem. If you rest your starters and, for whatever reason, Philadelphia and Dallas lose, you look like an ass for costing yourself a second home playoff game. This isn't complicated.
If the Lions were to end up going with Thibodeaux over Hutchinson at No. 2, it would say a lot about Brad Holmes sticking to his evaluation process without fear of fan backlash. That's an easy-to-appreciate trait.
Dan Campbell said he was trying to take back the momentum from the 49ers with his fourth-down decisions in the second half. Said he knows he'll face criticism, but he doesn't regret them.
No one wants to hear context, but Matt Patricia uses "work to do" as a crutch phrase in his press conferences. He said it six times yesterday, alone. But whatever he believes, he inherited a pretty good situation for a first-year coach and made things worse, in almost every way.
Whole team chanting, "Skip, Skip, Skip," is so cool. Six years after going undrafted, he made his first start in a position he hadn't really played since his freshman year of college.
Dan Campbell said they're going to set up a cornhole set in the hall to alleviate stress. That runs counter to Matt Patricia, who removed cornhole set and ping pong table from the locker room.
After not adjusting to an underthrow a couple plays earlier, potentially missing out on a TD, Jameson Williams makes an impressive adjustment tracking a deep shot for a redeeming score. Huge play for the second-year receiver.
The math is what it is. I mean, I saw a team get smashed by 20+ points at home in the regular season finale and still make the college football playoffs, so I suppose anything is possible.
Really strong thought from Dan Campbell. Said the more you win, the easier it is to get attached to players. Says you have to be able to take emotions out of it when making those roster decisions.
Slay said Matt Patricia told him he had no business working out with guys like Richard Sherman and Aqib Talib because those guys were elite and Slay was just good.
Equipment manager Tim O'Neill is someone I've seen almost every day I've been in Allen Park these past 12 years. He's also one of the nicest people I've ever met. It was a joy to write about him; a critical, behind-the-scenes player for the Lions:
I like David Montgomery. Have since he came out of college. Feels like he's been in the league longer than he has been. Can't believe he's only 25 years old (26 in June). Huge fan of Jamaal Williams the person, and empathetic to fan frustrations, but can't call this a downgrade.
Was chatting with Kalif Raymond after practice when Amon-Ra St. Brown walked by. Raymond said, "That guy is the hardest worker I've ever seen and it's not even close. I can't beat him and I'm trying."
Remarkable if you knew how much extra Raymond puts in every day.
If playoff odds are your thing, Lions currently sit at about 20%. If they can beat the Jets next week AND San Francisco and Washington win as favorites against the Seahawks and Giants, Lions' odds will jump to nearly 50%.
Two years ago, Dan Campbell was at this podium in Minnesota getting choked up after a devastating loss. This year, it's the other end of the emotional spectrum. "I'm ecstatic."
