I've started to realize how much better video is than photos for texture reference. Photos don't do a good job in showing how the surface responds to light. So here's a video of a magazine shot through a magnifying glass/ring light combo so I could get really close.

I wanted a good reference for a pistol magazine, so I made my own. Here are a couple photos where my specific goal in lighting was to emphasize the vertical scratches. Watch the video linked below to see how the scratches aren't as contrasted as the photos make them seem

WEAPON ARTISTS. I just found a treasure trove of scale reference. A holster manufacturer released all of their pistol and accessory 3D scans for free. It's just an external scan, but you won't find better scale reference than this. ?

Not character art, but hard surface. Before doing your high or low poly your topology doesn't matter at all if your surfaces are planar. Delete edges that are in your way, make n-gons. You don't really need to clean up until later. Messy is faster and better

@Evanylaaa If you're modeling a knife, sword, or similar don't merge your cutting edge down to a single geo edge. Leave a tiny quad flow that is your edge. It will be easier to model with and bake cleaner. You can always merge it down when you're completely done to save the tris

@ohle_mathiebe I feel like some people don't comprehend that in AAA shooters the guns take up a huge % of the screen. And they are basically the characters. Of course the texture budget is high. Then for personal renders you push it even higher for those sweet macro shots.

Here's my full M1917 Revolver project and breakdown up on ArtStation. It would mean everything if you could go check it out and tell me what you think!

If you happen to be using Maya instead of Blender you can achieve the same effect by using the Edit Pivot function in the tool menu or by the shortcut holding "d". Check on Position and Orientation. Then scale down to 0.

You can align a group of faces to a particular height by using the 'Active Element' pivot point in Blender to define the desired height based from the last selected face/edge/vert. No need for guess work.

Maya's marking menu system is superior to any other 3D software short cut system. You never have to move your hands from their home position. I miss it every time I learn a new software.

Struggling with the best way to present WIPs and how frequently to post them. Anyway here's some progress on the Splinter Cell pistol. I've been focusing on the slide. Getting facets that looked cool and integrated the shapes of the suppressor took a lot of itterations.
