A technical team from DG Energy travelled yesterday to Slovakia for talks with local representatives. But no immediate breakthrough was announced. The veto continues.

“I understand why Slovakia is worried and we are doing everything we can to help. We are convinced that we can, also by working with neighbouring countries, find solutions so that there will certainly not be any security supply problems but also that we can keep the prices down.”.

Speaking in Aarhus to a group of journalists, Jørgensen recognised that Slovakia had “legitimate concerns” and said the Commission will continue talks with Fico and his government. “Even if we disagree and even if they criticize me, we will still help as much as we can.”.

Brussels won’t give EU funds to make Robert Fico lift his veto. “We’re not negotiating on specific new subsidies or anything like that, but we are helping making sure that the supply of both oil and gas for Slovakia (…) will be steady,” says Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.
