Donald Trump's latest tariff threat comes with a message impossible to ignore: the EU-US trade war isn't over yet. It is just evolving. My analysis.

It’s a tragic irony that Mario Draghi’s words are most carefully read by those in power when in fact it’s those in power who are consistently preventing his big ideas from becoming a reality.

Usually it’s the State of the European Union speech that sets off the rentrée. Except Mario Draghi just did that. We have translated his speech here. We publish it in full because Draghi is read by everyone who matters in Europe. This is the zeitgeist.

However, this comparison is highly misleading. Whether the 15% tariff is inclusive or exclusive, it’s still a massive 15% tariff — a threefold increase compared to the average 4.8% tariff before Trump’s second term. Speaking of “favourable conditions” is just self-denial.
