He just did the same thing at @waitrose down the block - less than 500 yards from Kensington police station, whose officers - as so often - didn’t bother to respond to the calls from Whole Food staff.

A man stealing & throwing around food, then smashing a stolen bottle after threatening staff at @WholeFoods flagship store in London just now. Once upon a time he’d have had to be wary of patrolling @metpoliceuk officers; nowadays they don’t even come when the store calls 999

Watched ‘The Ipcress File’ 1966. It’s very 60s (self-conscious camera angles etc), but exciting & much funnier than I remembered. What shocks, besides Caine’s youth is how different London was: scruffy soot-black buildings, men in ties & hats, everyone smoking, ethnic homogeneity

Sad to hear of the death of the great Tom Lehrer, math professor turned satirical songwriter, whose comic genius, captured in a handful of 1960s albums, puts mist modern satirists to shame.

Finally saw Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic ‘Waterloo’ (1970) in its entirety. Dismissed at the time, the Italian-Russian coproduction is one of the one of the greatest war movies ever made - part Eisenstein, part Sergio Leone - with an astonishing performance by the great Rod Steiger

The US Army's new rifle - the XM7 - seems to have serious problems of accuracy & reliability, problems that the Pentagon has apparently tried to sweep under the rug, despite soldier complaints echoing a substantial independent report.

The infantry officer and Expeditionary Warfare School student presented his findings, which lambasted the new rifle for its ergonomics, weight, and durability.

The whole ‘military wing’ vs ‘political wing’ trope was dishonest bullshit when used of the IRA in the the 70s. Only someone utterly ignorant of Gaza or completely dishonest would apply it to Hamas.

We re in Comical Ali territory here. BBC ‘News’ chief widely mocked for ‘minimising’ failings of Gaza documentary by insisting Hamas leader was part of ‘political’ not ‘military’ wing of the organization.

Yesterday’s @thetimes has @metpoliceuk “intensifying patrols” in Knightsbridge after a tourist was murdered for his watch. But how do you “intensify” something that does not exist. For all intents & purposes there are no police patrols in London, only responses to reported crimes

The rusting HMS Lancaster should not be scrapped but moored permanently at Westminster as a monument to the shortsightedness of Britain's defence establishment & the foolishness of successive chancellors, who together have all but wrecked the Royal Navy

I'm yet to see a complete explanation for why Britain all but gave up on building infrastructure - and then lost the ability to do it in a remotely timely or cost-effective (let alone elegant) way.

“Every French city with a population of over 150,000 has a mass rapid transit system. Yet there are over 30 UK cities or towns of that size that still lack it.”. “… And one of the key reasons, why we have so few is cost. Building a kilometre of track in the UK is twice as.
