Bone-deep embarrassing for the Mariners FO & ownership that Cal Raleigh was made to feel the need to apologize for the absolute gentlest reflection on the reason they did not take a step forward after two 90-win seasons w/the easiest path to a division title in a decade.
Cal: “Obviously yesterday it was a really emotional day for everybody. I want to apologize to my teammates, my coaches the fans. It wasn't a time to talk about what-ifs in that scenario.”
Jarred Kelenic leaves the Seattle Mariners the same way Edwin Díaz did in the trade that brought him here:
A young talent used to facilitate a salary dump.
The Mariners are trading Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales and Evan White to the Braves for RHP Jackson Kowar and RHP Cole Phillips.
I will now turn off Twitter
Kyle Seager did basically everything you could ask of a homegrown star.
Exceeded expectations, signed an extension across the country from home, overhauled his body to continue producing as he aged.
I’m glad he’s happily retired, happy with Suárez’s hot start. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know unrealistic Seattle fans might be disappointed the Mariners were seemingly out from the start here, but it’s key to consider:
This deal would’ve skyrocketed the Mariners’ payroll from 17th to 16th (or a tie for 15th) per FanGraphs. Ghastly.
BREAKING: Shortstop Carlos Correa and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a 13-year, $350 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN.
I am not a
#FireServais
person, he deals with the hand he's dealt.
But him coming out this AM having had a conversation w/Cal (leading to his apology) about how he should've controlled himself better, followed by player after player echoing those same sentiments is... woof.
Logan Gilbert on Cal Raleigh’s comments: “Everybody’s got his back. I really don't think it was as controversial as it was made out to be. It's kind of just like, yeah, every team would be better by adding big players. That’s just how the league works.”
NEW from
@RyanDivish
: While Jerry Dipoto mentioned payroll flexibility after the trade, Scott Servais was more blunt. He didn’t want to see Jarred Kelenic go but spoke to the reasons behind it.
Until this year neither Corey Kluber nor Dallas Keuchel had seen their team lose a game where they threw a complete game and allowed 2 runs or fewer.
The Mariners are responsible for both.
In sticking with low-cost, less-certain solutions, the Mariners are spoiling an opportunity, not their fans.
Given the club’s statements and actual paths to success of the clubs the M’s say they’re modeling after, Seattle fans are right to be frustrated.
Remember a year ago when it was a legitimate discussion point for Kelenic to be a primary piece in acquiring Bryan Reynolds?
One year later, this is how Seattle chose to move him instead.
All-Star right fielder Justin Upton, released in spring training by the
#Angels
, will be signing a major-league contract with the Seattle
#Mariners
that will become official tonight. The Mariners will be responsible for only about $550,000 of Upton’s $28 million contract.
I counted, no joke, 80+ SPD officers on my walk from Pioneer Square to the stadium and back last night, standing around on their phones in clumps. Didn’t matter.
Throwing cops at an area is not efficient or scientific public safety strategy.
Three deadly shootings happened in less than 12 hours in Seattle in the midst of Major League Baseball's All-Star Week. Two of the shootings were in Sodo, south of T-Mobile Park.
Of the national broadcasts, hard to overstate far ahead Peacock is of ESPN/FOX/TBS/TNT, et al.
Combining knowledgable, professional local broadcasters made for such a refreshing experience. Hopefully even one of the playoff broadcasting channels learns the lesson.

Last year Julio Rodríguez had a 146 wRC+.
This year so far he's at 110.
Last year the Mariners got an 81 wRC+ from the DH position & 79 from 2B.
This year so far it's an 8 & 27.
Julio could be better, but the answer to where most of the offense has gone isn't some secret.
“He hasn’t been terrible by any means, but if this is who he’s going to be this year, if he’s not the dynamic Julio Rodríguez of 2022, the Mariners, I think, are going to be in for a long season," ESPN's Jeff Passan said of the star
#Mariners
outfielder.
Wild to see this same script replaying from a few years ago in Seattle, where the supposed AQI cutoff was 200, yet a double-header where it was in the 280s at times.
Produced one of the most surreal plays and days in my Mariners memory.
A major league source told

that MLB is monitoring the smoke in the Bronx. But there was no indication, at the time of publication, that Wednesday's

game would be postponed despite unhealthy air quality levels.
More details:
Some more detailed accusations from Logan Morrison on Instagram, calling out the Astros as far back as 2014, as well as the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox for using technology to aid sign-stealing.
As a DH this year...
JDM: 171 PA, 116 wRC+, 0.5 WAR
Pence: 109 PA, 89 wRC+, 0.0 WAR
Cruz: 164 PA, 137 wRC+, 0.8 WAR
Ohtani: 128 PA, 100 wRC+, 0.0 WAR
Stanton: Hasn't played DH in 2019.
Vogelbach: 189 PA, 157 wRC+, 1.5 WAR
Since 2016, only 3 position players in the Seattle Mariners organization have played more than 2 games at Double-A at age-21 or younger:
Julio Rodríguez
Jarred Kelenic
Tyler O'Neill
If this is a lasting call-up, it's a big vote of confidence in Jonatan Clase.
Prospect News: Outfielder Jonatan Clase is headed to Double-A Arkansas.
Clase hit .333 with a 1.154 OPS in High-A Everett with 7 HR and 17 SB in 21 games this season.
I am astonished daily by the effort Edwin Encarnación has given for this ludicrous team. Could've easily pouted but has gone all out while playing more in the field than he has in years.
Kyle Seager's hitting triples and stealing bases, the Mariners have a lights out bullpen of people nobody's heard of, and their new 2B is an absolute force at the top of the lineup.
2014 is back baby
Big moments = big narratives. If it’d been Mitch Haniger, it was the longest tenured Mariner delivering the promised land. Carlos Santana? The ver w/WS exp coming up big.
But it was Cal Raleigh, the guy they bet big on being their backstop of the future.
One of our camera crew caught this in the dugout.
After two HRs, Cal Raleigh spent the top of the 9th inning going over the game plan for tomorrow's game with Logan Gilbert.
Talent will get you to the pros. Work ethic will get you to The Show.
MLB players with at least 45 hits, 30 RBI, 15 XBH & 10 SB in a single month (since RBI became an official stat in 1920):

I hope the Mariners players feel emboldened to strike tonight.
MLB revels in civic pride & its legacy of change, built on the backs of folks the league & its cities often opposed. Seattle’s players deserve support from the org & city for the inevitable blowback if they sit out.
Following the cancellation of the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds game tonight, more teams are discussing the possibility of not playing, sources tell ESPN. Among those currently discussing it: the Seattle Mariners, who have the most Black players of any team in MLB.
The Mariners have tempted fate at every level this year from roster construction and payroll down to players choosing not to vaccinate. Disappointing but not shocking.
The Seattle Mariners have at least one COVID positive, sources tell ESPN, and there is concern within the organization that the relatively low level of vaccination within the clubhouse could be problematic. The Mariners, source said, are among the least-vaccinated teams in MLB.
Hollander's quote here is obviously directly at odds w/what he and Dipoto have stated when asked previously publicly as the Seattle Times/710/MLB.com/etc. have reported again and again.
It's never been true, of course. You don't make these trades if you have financial resources.
GM Justin Hollander: "Obviously, the offseason doesn't end on December 1. We need to go out and we need to get better. And before you can do that, you have to create pathways to go do that. And this just opens up more pathways for us to do that."
Seattle's issues all intertwine w/its disastrous tumble to the right over the past decade, supplicating itself to businesses over the priced out rest of the population & slowing progress wherever possible.
But we had one socialist city councilmember, so lefty experimentalism!
Seattle voters signaled they're ready to move on after a decade of lefty experimentalism, writes columnist Danny Westneat. Time for something more basic.

How long can the Mariners and MLB teams stay financially viable without fans in attendance?
@RyanDivish
answers that and more in his latest mailbag.
Mitch Haniger is having one of the top-10 seasons of any Mariners outfielder in franchise history. Only Griffey, Ichiro, Guti, and Cammy have had seasons quite like this.
Baseball is a great simulacrum for "real-life" emotional ebbs and flows. But this is... real-life sad.
22 y/o rising star gets beat bad in huge moment by 34 y/o friend+mentor w/strong 10 year career in MLB & WS ring, and then that person tries to humiliate him. Grim.
Julio would not comment on what was said when Neris came at him. For now he has no plan to talk to him. Called the incident eye-opening.
"I just have to be careful on who I trust, who I think is a friend, I think I have to review."
I get that this is goofy from a talent perspective but for a Mariners FO that has earned plenty of flak for its relationships with its stars…
I appreciate outspoken loyalty to a player who clearly bought in on Seattle’s coaching & has delivered.
Asked Dipoto if he would say no to Carlos Correa if he said he would only sign if he could play shortstop: "Of course. We already told JP yes. JP Crawford is our shortstop."

@Mariners
weeknight games at

Evening home games will start at 6:40 p.m. during the months of April, May and September.

The Astros announcers are offering an incomprehensible argument that Lucroy is going out of his way to block the plate and that Marisnick tried to simply "slide over Lucroy and avoid him".
This is *presumably* just for the scheduled minor league awards ceremony and autograph session but listen... just let him hang out on the field long enough, give him a bat and a glove, whatever happens happens
Kraken tickets come with free public transportation on monorail, light rail, bus, and water taxi to and from the game, which is genuinely awesome and every sports arena in America should do it.
Source confirms: Superstar outfielder Seiya Suzuki will be available to
@MLB
teams through the posting process. The 27-year-old will immediately become one of the top outfielders available this winter. Here's my story.
@MLBNetwork
I had believed the Mariners were intending to platoon Luis Urías and Josh Rojas at 2B. It now appears Urías is the replacement at 3B, which is a muchhhhh tougher sell.
Trade news, per ESPN sources:
Arizona Diamondbacks acquire third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
Seattle Mariners acquire reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.
Diamondbacks get their third baseman. Mariners move money off the books and get a live arm and backup catcher.
Disappointing deadline for the Mariners bc of communication. Underwhelming overall but fine moves.
Poor internal decision-conveyance and unnecessary public over-promising.
GM Jerry Dipoto: "We were unwilling to the meet the prices to the targets we did have. We were resistant to trading our top prospects for a short-term gain."
