The NFL would like everyone to believe that anti-Black racism no longer impacts how the league evaluates QBs. However, in my latest
@SFGate
, I found that Black QBs were consistently underdrafted compared to their peers in the 2010-22 NFL Drafts. (1/5)
So it took The Athletic, what? 5 years to go through the tech cycle.
1. Claim you are changing the game
2. Invest an unsustainable amount of capital
3. Sell
4. Begin layoffs and change mission to be exactly the same as the orgs you originally claimed weren’t doing things right
People are going to put this loss on Jaquiski Tartt’s drop, but Kyle Shanahan’s decision to punt on 4th-and-2 and Jimmy Garoppolo’s horrendous final two drives had just as much of an impact.
@FDsignifier
the weird way adults will always make romantic comments about a boy spending time with a girl.
probably more heteronormative, but I think it's a way boys are socialized to view women as only objects of romantic/sexual interest.
Jimmy Garoppolo had two turnovers that gave Green Bay the ball inside the SF 38. The 49ers defense allowed a combined 3 points on those drives.
Did SF’s defense play a perfect game? No. But anyone blaming the defense and ignoring Jimmy’s struggles is missing the bigger picture.
Jonathan Kuminga has accrued just over 30 minutes of playing time between tonight's first half and the Warriors' past two games (vs. Bulls & @ Hornets).
He has recorded 20 points on 9-15 from the field, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and is +22.
My heart goes out to the folks at the company, particularly those who were laid off. Plenty of people have been doing great work there. It just sucks that plenty of fans have lost one of their only beats.
It’s probably not very visible in the picture, but I just drove by Oracle Park and the scoreboard is illuminated with NPB star Kodai Senga in a
#SFGiants
uniform with the
#41
. It’s been reported
#SFGameUp
is interested in the free-agent righty and seems like a visit is imminent.
Moody and Kuminga sat for the entire fourth quarter (Moody got another DNP in the game). Jackson-Davis sat for the first 8.5 minutes (before entering with the lead down to 5).
Baffling why the veterans, who have blown leads all season, continue to get so many chances to fail.
His tenure in San Francisco has had plenty of highs and plenty of lows, but in a game where his head coach wasn’t as aggressive as he needed to be offensively and his defense was more good than great, Jimmy Garoppolo’s shortcoming finally caught up with the 49ers.
Per source,
#SFGiants
top outfielder prospect Luis Matos has been promoted and is heading to Triple-A. Matos was ranked the fourth-best prospect in the system entering the season
@SFGiantsFN
and has hit .304/.399/.444 at Double-A.
Now attention shifts to whether the NBA will downgrade Draymond Green's flagrant 2. It might be easier to do, since no one can say it cost the Warriors the game.
If they don't, Green is just 2 flagrant points away from an automatic suspension.
The
#49ers
added 4 players in the first three rounds of this year's draft. I believe we're on pace for none of them to play a snap tonight:
1. Trey Lance (out)
2. Aaron Banks (available, has not played)
3. Trey Sermon (available, has not played)
4. Ambry Thomas (healthy scratch)
I know it's common knowledge that Aaron Judge was a big
#SFGiants
fan growing up, but considering how he went out of his way to say he wouldn't be a Yankee next year when he was asked this week, it seems noteworthy that he mentions his
#SFGameUp
fandom here.
Aaron Judge on playing for Dusty Baker: “It was great. Been a big fan of Dusty for years. I grew up being a Giants fan. Watched a lot of games that he managed. It was a great experience all- around.
One thing that’s never been in doubt, Jimmy Garoppolo loves the 49ers, loves his teammates, and has earned tons of respect from his teammates/coaches. He deserves the best wherever he ends up.
"I think these next couple of days it'll really start to settle in... You gotta be glad it happened, smile from it, and think about the good things... I love this team. Just the fight and the battle in this team has been really impressive and I love those guys." -Jimmy Garoppolo
Very happy for Bart. The emergence of Bailey obviously makes it less of an issue for the Giants from a team building perspective, but it raises some more questions about the Giants player development approach if Bart proves to be a solid everyday player.
A source has informed me that Luis Matos is indeed on his way to St. Louis to join the
#SFGiants
. Matos entered the season as the
#4
prospect in the org
@SFGiantsFN
and hit .350/.414/.561 in the minors this year. He will presumably take Mitch Haniger's spot on the roster.
1. The mishandling of Renel Brooks-Moon should force Greg Johnson out of his role with the team
2. If she wants to pursue that path, I hope she has enough receipts for a successful discrimination case
This is the crazy part.
Curry, Thompson, and Green will have an offseason where no one is rehabbing a major injury.
Kuminga, Poole, Moody, and Wiseman will have an offseason to develop.
Nothing is guaranteed, but the Warriors won it all seemingly a year early.
It seems like there are 2 main questions for the 49ers now heading into the playoffs:
1) Can Trent Williams return to the lineup in Dallas?
2) How does Garoppolo’s thumb respond to playing? It didn’t look like it inhibited him today, but it could swell up in the coming days.
Trey Lance released that touchdown from the left hash of the SF 16 with pressure bumping his side. Danny Gray caught the pass down the left sideline at the GB 42.
I don't know the last time I've seen a 49ers QB deliver such a good pass 44 yards downfield along the sideline.
I'm not sure if it's worth an article on its own, but I wanted to highlight Gabe Kapler's full comments from pregame today on the
#SFGiants
Pride Celebration today:
The
#SFGiants
scoreboard graphic does not have Tommy Pham's name during introductions at Oracle Park (PA announcer Renel Brooks-Moon did say his name). Could be a mistake, but definitely seems pointed given his history with the organization.
He's not the hero tonight, but Kris Bryant had another fantastic game for
#ResilientSF
. Bryant has posted a .385/.448/.615 triple-slash across his first 29 plate appearances for the
#SFGiants
. The 2016 NL MVP is making quite the first impression for the Orange & Black.
The 49ers have now scored at least 30 points in 6 of their last 7 games, which coincides with when Brock Purdy replaced Jimmy Garoppolo.
The last time the Niners did that was Week 12 through the Wild-Card Round in 1998 (Steve Young's last full NFL season).
Btw, now that we know the
#SFGiants
are willing to spend with Farhan Zaidi,
#SFGameUp
is set to have $59.15 million come off the books after next season even if Manaea, Stripling, and Cobb all have their options exercised.
So…
David Lee's injury opened the door for Draymond Green to start back in 2014-15. The Dubs started 21-2 and never looked back.
Would be a strange full circle if Green's suspension ends up propelling his exodus.
A false report from Bob Nightengale made a bad situation for
#SFGiants
outfielder Alex Dickerson worse. Frustratingly, it was just the latest example of the columnist's disregard for the truth.
My piece on media accountability & trust for
@RoundTheFoghorn
People are misreading why Draymond Green left the court the way he did imo. Jumping around smiling and chiding folks like that reads to me like what you do when you are so enraged but are trying to avoid doing something that'll get you suspended.
I don't think Gui Santos is ready to crack an NBA rotation, especially on the Warriors, but if Golden State can stash him for a year or two, it really looks like they'll have something.
Jonathan Kuminga is thriving in a role built for his strengths. It’s such a contrast to how the Dubs handled James Wiseman last season. Seems like the improved depth and revamped staff are setting the young players up for success. Gotta think it'll help Wiseman when he returns.
The
#SFGiants
have found the most effective placebo in MLB history. Send injured players who don't want to run the bases to the plate so they have to hit home runs.
Chris Paul never getting a ring will define him, but consider this: Kobe and MJ are the 2nd and 3rd shortest best players on championship teams in the last 30 years.
Even today, smaller guards are rarely leading champions. Just one more way Steph Curry is in a league of his own.
Per source,
#SFGiants
outfielder prospect Heliot Ramos was scratched from tonight's game in Sacramento because he is traveling to San Francisco to join the team. He will likely be added to the roster on Sunday. (
@maddelucchi
)
Kyle Shanahan’s postgame press conference, where he explained that Trey Lance was only prepared for a few sub packages is exactly why sitting him isn’t the positive for his development that many purport it to be. Backups just don’t get enough reps in the NFL.
The Bucks lost to the Nets 125-86 in the East Semis and 110-88 in the East Finals to a Hawks team without Trae Young last year.
The Warriors have a lot of alarming issues, but it's way too oversimplified to use one game's point differential to say they aren't title contenders.
Heliot Ramos just hit a 439' (111.0 mph exit velo) walk-off home run at Triple-A. He is now 6-for-15 with 2 2B, 3 HR, 4 BB, and 5 K (19 PA) in four games since the
#SFGiants
optioned him back to Triple-A.
As the Aaron Judge sweepstakes wind down, it’s worth checking out my article comparing the
#SFGiants
and
#Yankees
rosters without the slugger. While public perception seems to believe the Yankees are a better situation, the reality is more complicated.
Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers players seem genuinely at a loss for what went wrong. Everyone has said they had a good week of practice and emphasized not lowering the intensity level if Kyler didn't play.
So why did things fall apart? They don't know. That's a bad place to be.
I remain perplexed by capping a pitcher at 70 pitches in the minors, only to push them further against big-league competition.
Bryce Harper hit that three-run homer on the 74th pitch of Black's day.
He hadn't thrown that many pitches in an outing since last September.
If Carlos Correa does agree to a lesser deal with the Mets, that doesn't vindicate the
#SFGiants
. It means they probably could've signed Correa if they had engaged in active negotiations with Boras rather than saying, "Fine [negotiate with other teams]," and not followed up.
Thairo Estrada is making a really compelling case to be the
#SFGiants
everyday second baseman next year. He's been so good for
#ResilientSF
between Triple-A and the big leagues and has the defensive versatility to handle short on occasion as well.
The
#SFGiants
added 11 future All-Stars via the draft from 2002-2011.
2002: Matt Cain
2003: Brian Wilson
2005: Sergio Romo
2006: Tim Lincecum
2007: Madison Bumgarner
2008: Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford
2009: Zack Wheeler, Brandon Belt
2010: Adam Duvall
2011: Joe Panik
David Villar and Luis Matos have both been lifted from their games in Sacramento. I imagine they will be on flights to St. Louis ASAP. (Doesn't guarantee they are called up depending on the prognosis)
The Warriors perimeter scoring potential is out of this world when Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Jordan Poole are all hitting their shots. It won't happen a lot, but when it does, I don't see how anyone can keep up.
The most important
#SFGiants
development may be Patrick Bailey's regression at the plate. He's now hitting .249/.305/.391 since his callup. It's slightly better than Joey Bart last year, but it's a far cry from the borderline All-Star he looked like earlier this season.
During his pregame media availability on Tuesday,
#SFGiants
manager Gabe Kapler showed some support for fans organizing
#UniteTheBay
.
"It's part of the reason A's fans are so upset right now, and I think for good reason."
Divisions matter less with expanded wild card, but it's pretty clear that the
#SFGiants
path to relevance is doing everything they can to build the best rotation in MLB. They won't catch the Dodgers, Dbacks, or Padres offensively, but pitching tends to wins in the playoffs.
In his past five games,
#SFGiants
top infielder prospect Marco Luciano is hitting .588/.682/1.353 with a double, four home runs, five walks, and just two strikeouts. That's one way to make sure Luis Matos isn't the only top offensive prospect in the system getting attention.
The 49ers losing today isn't surprising, but it puts all the pressure on next week's game against the Rams. Niners have lost too many games they should've won this season (CHI, DEN, ATL) and that means they can't afford a loss next week in LA.
Do you ever just daydream about what the
#SFGiants
rotation would look like if they had re-signed Kevin Gausman and had him, Rodón, and Webb as their top-three starters?
Fred Warner on the impact defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has had this year: "I can't talk about it enough... Some of the losses we've had in the secondary and it doesn't matter. He has set the standard for what kind of defense we're going to come out with."
For all the discourse today,
#SFGiants
just landed the biggest international free agent in franchise history to the largest free agent contract the organization has ever handed a free agent position player.
The Vikings won on a last second field goal, setting up a huge game next week against the Niners. Both teams are 5-5 and currently in the playoffs. The 49ers broke their home winless streak last Monday against the Rams, but they’ll need another victory at Levi’s next Sunday.
"They came out really well. I thought our D was playing really good. They were just so good, Stafford was unbelievable on third down, especially in the first half. Offense it took us a little bit to settle down... but our guys settled down and did a helluva job." -Kyle Shanahan
Since I've been plenty critical of the
#SFGiants
, it's important to clarify that Bruce Bochy was not forced out as SF's manager. He was physically worn down and wanted to avoid a situation where the team continued to struggle and he had to leave on someone else's terms. (1/2)
Marco Luciano is now hitting .257/.389/.514 with four doubles and five home runs in 90 PA this month. His 31.1% K% has room to work, but he's roughly the same age as a draft-eligible college junior, and he's doing this in the toughest hitting environments in the minors.
The 49ers finally put it all together against an inferior opponent, beating the Bears 33-22. Jimmy Garoppolo had his best game since 2019 and Brandon Aiyuk finally was a notable part of the offense. The defense had its struggles, but they got the stops when they needed them.
Trey Lance showed his volatility mixing inaccurate throws and bad decisions with fantastic plays. It was a promising second start for the rookie and he improved as the game went on. I hope he gets the chance to build on this in Week 18 and the postseason (if SF gets there).
Not that
#SFGiants
fans want to hear this now, but get ready for another offseason of free-agent sweepstakes next year. SF has $70 million+ coming off the books and a class highlighted by Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Corbin Burnes, Shane Bieber, Max Fried, Zack Wheeler.
So... if Jeff Passan's report is correct and the Yankees offered Aaron Judge an 8/$300m deal, topping that at 8/$320m is a layup.
#SFGiants
could also frontload the contract as a bonus for Judge and to avoid paying him $40m a year into his late-30s.
55, 50, 45, 40, 40, 35, 30, 25
Uh... Heliot Ramos just homered AGAIN!!! The former
#SFGiants
top prospect is now 13-for-23 with 4 2B, 1 3B, and 4 HR with 5 K (24 PA) since returning to Triple-A.
In a series that had Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, it was the 34-year old 6'3'' point guard who was able to get the easiest shots.
Obviously Steph Curry's shooting is unparalleled, but it's so impressive how he always finds a way to get to the rim when his team needs a bucket.
Did the Giants ever put out graphics with Bruce Bochy in the front with Cain, Lincecum, Posey, Pence, etc., behind him? Not calling anybody out if not, but just feels like the team is doing well enough that they should be deemphasizing Kapler to market the young players.
I'm seeing a growing "the real issue with Farhan Zaidi is the farm system" thing and I want to address some misperceptions that I'm seeing. I'm critical of the
#SFGiants
front office, but at worst, the jury is out on their drafts, and I think it's trending positively. (1/9)
The Cowboys defensive line dared the refs to call them for holding all game on Sunday against the 49ers. Here are a few clips I found just watching Randy Gregory where he seemed to be prioritizing tackling a blocker over shedding them (only the last play drew a flag).
The referees tried to make Game 1 about themselves, but the Warriors overcame Draymond Green’s ejection to come away with an impressive victory in Memphis.
Not sure if he'll land on the IL, but if that's where Michael Conforto ends up, the
#SFGiants
only have one healthy outfielder on the 40-man roster in the minors. And it's a certain 21-year-old top prospect who has been crushing Triple-A since he was promoted.
In 2022,
#Yankees
not named Aaron Judge hit .233/.311/.396. The
#SFGiants
hit .234/.315/.390. Judge may re-sign, but New York does not have a clearly better supporting cast to offer than
#SFGameUp
. I broke down both rosters in my latest
@SFGiantsFN
.
It's pretty much industry consensus at this point that Matos has 40-45 grade (below-average) power potential and probably 50-55 grade speed. He's an amazing prospect because of an elite feel for baseball that reflects an incredible work ethic and understanding of the game.
The more I think about it... if the
#SFGiants
were willing to give Carlos Correa (last offseason's Plan B) 13/$350m, why wouldn't they go to $300m+ for Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
I feel like the added risk of pitching/NPB transition gets counterbalanced pretty heavily by youth.
I know this isn’t how the world works. But there’s still a part of me thinking about how poetic it would be if Steph Curry plays his worst basketball in years until Klay Thompson returns and gets hot when the Splash Brothers are reunited on the court.
Quirky 49ers stat: After another quiet receiving day from George Kittle, the 49ers have now gone four consecutive games without a tight end recording at least 30 yards receiving for the first time since Weeks 3-6 in 2015, when Vernon Davis missed two games with an injury.
Some thoughts on the
#SFGiants
getting Jung-Hoo Lee:
1. Makes sense that Zaidi's first nine-figure deal goes to an up-the-middle player who has consistently walked more than he struck out.
2. Wonder if part of the aggressive play was not wanting to be forced all-in on Bellinger.
Are you interested in a paid opportunity to write about the San Francisco Giants? I'm looking at launching an
