(I personally don't like .js for simple websites. I think it is (most of the time) valuing developer convenience over accessibility, enviromental impact, SEO and load time for first time users). Will still fight on this hill, when Bingbot has catched up to Google regarding this.

So we are here. We could: ① …rebuild the site (a site working for users & Google but not for bing) ② …change hosting to enable cloaking (too costly because of side effects and deep integration) ③ …build workaround to enable cloaking (bad, costly, not ready before 2025)

We thought about cloaking SSR for Bingbot as duplicated wouldn't be as bad for bing as not having the elements at all. But the hoster is not willing to support here. So we would need a workaround to make the workaround possible which is not how engineering should work.

More on the background problem. The client built the page with shadowDOM and Web components in @stenciljs. Prerendering stencil.js is not possible as stencil is then duplicating all elements. So SSR everything is not an option.

More on how I compared the html using Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (Can't thank you enough for these tools! @googlesearchc, @BingWMC !): I chose an url that was crawled at a similar time. And I downloaded and compared the indexed html. Not some live-crawl.

You see, how bing is missing the headings and nearly all links. It's clear Bingbot is missing out on a lot of content and links. Surprisingly, the site still performs well in Bing search results, indicating Bing does recognize the site's value.

Web Components + SSR seems to be the mess of 2023. Different frameworks fail to provide usable solutions. Some duplicating all nodes. Others failing to transfer styles. Not every site needs to solve this. But for some it is. Who has examples where it worked as advertised?
