I have just emailed the letter below to the president of Duke University (my PhD-granting institution) regarding sexual harassment. Thanks to many, both at Duke and beyond, who have offered support. And to any who read: I hope you read my scholarship too.

@DukeChronicle
Hi! Thanks for the empathy. This reached further than I anticipated. I see that some folks responding here don't totally know what Religious Studies as a discipline is, what a bib scholar does, or whether or not I'm evil, so I'm collected some data for you here.
#teachon
Today I was notified that I have been granted tenure at
@UofOklahoma
. I will be promoted to Associate Professor of Religious Studies effective July 1.
Update! I have accepted an offer to join the School of Religion at the University of Southern California as Associate Professor of Religion, starting in 2024* I'm excited for many reasons: graduate students (send some my way!), fantastic colleagues, all the things.
I have seen so many calls for unity right now, including from the pres of my uni. So I just want to scream into the universe: what you're asking is for victims/survivors of abuse/disenfranchisement to team up with their abusers. Unity is code for assimilation. Stop it.
A critical take on
@bethallisonbarr
's 'The Breaking of Biblical Womanhood' from
@JillHicksKeeton
: 'Barr’s analysis removes from view the possibility that evangelical Christianity might be irredeemably patriarchal precisely because of its biblicism.'
Dear evangelicals, both within and outside the academy, I have something to say to you. It's something that haunts me almost daily. Here's the thing:
You have a talent problem. Which is related to an expertise problem. Let me say more 1/?
I am honored to have been awarded a 2020 Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise for my book _Arguing with Aseneth_ (

Just introduced self in a (Zoom) departmental welcome back event and at the end said "This semester I'm teaching Bible+Trauma and Sex+Bible and kindergarten and second grade." It just came out.

Funny story I accidentally inscribed two copies for my friend Ben but he only needs one SO! To enter: reply to this thread by Sunday noon praising your favorite “Ben.” Winner selected randomly.
Update: it appears that Price has spoken to the press rather than to me. He quibbles over the scale of the award, ignoring the sexual harassment. This article also has comments from
@dukereligion
professors and my fellow students from that seminar:
Don’t tell him because it’s a surprise but my kid is winning an award for kindness at his elementary school and so I’m catching a 5am flight to make the award ceremony.
The mirage of "objectivity" has always served the interests of the hegemonic. That's what DeYoung is doing here: asserting his rightness on the basis of the fact that he has not suffered under a system designed to give him power.
And now I watch as male academic colleagues who are evangelical are allowed to stay - and have their work mean something more - because they fit within the bounds of who counts as an expert. What if my critique mattered just as much? I think the world would be a better place 10/?
Hi y'all today's my birthday and it's so lovely to have had friends reach out! For a number of reasons, including the pandemic, I've been pretty isolated.
Could I ask you to do me a favor? Text someone you haven't heard from in a while - make sure they know you care.

I attended a rally today to join with

faculty, staff, and students demanding a mask mandate and vaccine mandate for workplace and learning environment safety.
Pictured here are two counter-protestors.
Been thinking about the
@RevKevDeYoung
review of
@bethallisonbarr
_Making of Biblical Womanhood_ that lots of folks posted about (I saw on

feed especially). I empathize with those who claim his tone is mocking and who rush to defend Barr.
I'm so glad
@UofOklahoma
is complying with the EO and requiring all employees to be vaccinated.
On the form I see that employees are able to request a "religious accommodation" which entails writing a paragraph for HR.
Query! Who's training HR on how to assess religion?
Thank you for the outpouring of support! I remain proud of the letter to Duke. In support of my hope that it would not completely outpace other things I've written, many have asked what to read next. Some other things I'm proud to have written, on religion & public life and more:
Evangelicals often talk a good game about reading books that challenge their views rather than confirm them. To those who mean that, I have your book.
@JillHicksKeeton
’s book WILL challenge. I dare you to read it. (Was gonna be travel-reading this week, but I can’t put it down!)
😈’s advocate: think this is not great advice. Historiography / theory / secondary lit help us understand why what we think is possible, help us read things in new ways, help us nourish and historicize our own curiosities.
This is maybe the most important advice for being an excellent scholar, and it’s basically the opposite of how grad school usually works.
It might make it harder to get a job initially (secondary scholars sometimes look trendier), but your work will be far better for it
@JillHicksKeeton
and I have a new book! Tired of hearing about
@museumofBible
’s scandals? This book is not that. It’s a call to rethink biblical studies, follow the funding behind

, and attend to how white evangelical institutions work

A very significant scholar came to my backyard this evening for supper. One of my kids called her “whoever you are” and then “boctor boobie.” Meanwhile the other kid broke a tooth in half.

But, like, it didn't have to be that way. You could choose to listen to internal critics who look like me or who are persons of color or who are LGBTQ+ 8/?

So glad it’s in the world. Help me share if you’re inclined?
Visiting my folks. My parents always ask a blessing before meals. Last night, with all heads bowed and eyes closed, my dad indicated it was my turn to ask it by saying “Dear God, please listen to Jill.”
I said “amen” and started eating.

Being a woman in the academy so often means watching mediocrity being rewarded and then doubling down to work twice as hard so as to prove to your inner self that you are not, in fact, also mediocre.
I propose that humanities academia eliminate the genre “book review” and instead cultivate pieces/panels called “I read it. Now what?” Books have already been peer-reviewed. And reviews that think expansively and collaboratively in conversation with someone’s work are 💯
Had the good fortune to be treated to the fanciest Italian place in town, one I would not take myself to. Ordered duck ragu. Took home leftovers to share with the littles. Now my 4yo, fan of mac&cheese and pizza, wants duck every night. I have created an adorable monster.
Are people still on this platform? In case you are: here's a reminder that my new book is coming out in a little over a month and is available for pre-order. Kindle version is under $20 right now!
Barr's argument is most persuasive when she speaks as a harmed participant pushing back rather than "as a historian." I wish that THAT were the main reason her supporters want to

On what I call "Bible-benevolence" - the evolving intellectual, rhetorical, & moral work that people do to make the Bible good. Case study: white evangelicals + violence + misogyny. Co-stars Joshua, Jesus, & Paul.
My state has outlawed teaching “CRT” in any required class at the uni level.
Until it’s repealed this means at a most basic level that those of us teaching electives are now on deck to design our syllabi to resist this attempted erasure of attention to systemic racism
