Today is Ash Wednesday, or the first day of Lent. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan. Similarly, lent is observed by fasting for 40 days in preparation for Easter.

Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was appointed by President John Adams to be Treasurer of the U.S. Mint. Rush served as vice president of America’s first Bible society and was a leading advocate for use of the Bible in public schools.
