How do we understand Earth's climate history? Each layer of Antarctic ice holds a snapshot of the past weather. Prof Nerilie Abram FAA (@ClimateNerili, @ourANU) reconstructs climate over the last millennium using these natural records.

Scientists have reconstructed 400 yrs of 🌊ocean temperatures from 🪸coral cores. The results chronicle how recent heat extremes & mass coral bleaching events on the #GreatBarrierReef are unprecedented in the past 400 yrs. @benhenley @DrHelenMcGregor ➡️ https://t.co/U2tPWAwh8R

How does the elevation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet vary with ENSO, Southern Annular Mode, or Amundsen Sea Low? Our new GRL paper has the info based on analysis of satellite altimetry data (and GRACE) @AntarcticSciAus

2/3 Key takeaways: .@JessicaMacha5 shows Central Pacific El Niño has a larger influence on Antarctic snow accumulation than eastern Pacific EN. Impacts are greatest in West Antarctica but extend across the continent in interesting ways. Out today! https://t.co/TCd823jLdq

@AMacGlac @benhenley @DrHelenMcGregor @ariaanpurich @saef_arc 5/5 CP El Niño snow accumulation increases⬆️are bigger and more widespread than those of EP El Niño. Accurate predictions in future El Niño event type, frequency & intensity are crucial to understanding how Antarctica🇦🇶will respond to a warming climate.

@AMacGlac @benhenley @DrHelenMcGregor @ariaanpurich @saef_arc 4/5 We show Central Pacific El Niño events enhance snow accumulation❄️in West Antarctica🇦🇶, in austral winter & spring.Predicted⬆️in CP El Niño intensity &frequency could cause⬆️West Antarctic snow accumulation which could potentially offset regional ocean-driven melt🧊
