The most egregious thing about this post is that it purposely formats Wilson’s translation so that the lines aren’t in iambic pentameter, which is her most brilliant contribution to the canon of Odyssey translations.

I feel like I’m insane. “Tell me about a complicated man” is a rich line. “Cannibal king, you eat your people up.” is also great. It is not “suitable for high schoolers”, you are pretending if you think you are smarter than it.

Wilson is the first woman to publish a translation of the Odyssey. Her translation, to me as a reader, is absolutely influenced by the way she has experienced the world as a woman. Just as male translators are influenced by the ways in which they have experienced the world.

I love Wilson’s translation. For me, she complicates Odysseus as hero. She holds him more accountable for his actions through her language choices. Her work reaches beyond the academy, returning the Odyssey to popular - and populist - literature. Would totally recommend ❤️

My thought on this - translation itself is an art form, an act of creation. No translation can be said to be totally accurate. A translation is colored by the thoughts and ideas and priorities of the translator. 1/?
"Oh, you've never read The Odyssey???" Your timing is perfect. Emily Wilson's translation is the best one in literally ages, has that sweet iambic pentameter to give it a "bouncy" feel, & makes dudebros cry that the classic has "gone woke". 😁

I actually think it takes supreme skill to write lyrics this dumb. weak writing would be something like “dance all night I’m feeling all right.” “that’s that me espresso” borders on divine intervention
Amazing that it took 4 songwriters to come up with lines like "that's that me espresso," "my 'give-a-fucks' are on vacation," and "my twisted humor make him laugh so often"
