They also give them as much time as they need between games. It doesn’t matter if it takes 5 or 7 years, the next Zelda release date is always “when it’s done.” Persona is like this, too.
Hi everyone! Starting in August 2023, I’ll begin my independent career at Arizona State University (
@ASU_SMS
) as part of the Navrotsky-Eyring Center for Materials of the Universe. I’m really excited to discover new quantum materials with my group!
After having enough time to reflect on it, I wanted to share my thoughts here on the chemistry job market based on my own experiences. I hope that this thread might be useful to people applying in the coming cycles.

Hi everyone! My research group at Arizona State is interested in hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the physical characterization of quantum materials. Interested applicants can send me their CV at jason.khoury
@asu
.edu.
Getting a rejection email from a faculty position that I applied to, when I already knew they’d chosen other candidates from the online faculty status tracker 3 months ago, is a great reminder of how little transparency this process has.
My grad student just did his first reactions and it hit me that we just reached a milestone as an independent research group. Every experiment is progress!
My work with
@SchoopLab
is finally out in
@J_A_C_S
! We talk about hypervalent linear chains as a motif for discovering new topological materials. Check it out!
Thrilled I can finally share this! It’s an honor to be an Arnold O. Beckman postdoctoral fellow and I’m really grateful to the
@BeckmanFnd
for the opportunity. I also can’t thank
@SchoopLab
enough for helping me.
#AOBPostdoc
I’ve seen a lot of posts recently about profs getting overloaded with students inquiring about PhD positions in their lab. I’ve had this happen to me too, so I figured I’d collect my thoughts in a thread.

My review with
@SchoopLab
on chemical bonds in topological materials got the September cover of

One thing I love the about how solid-state chemistry interacts with physics is how we think about structure. When you break a structure down into its sublattices, they can tell you so much information about the electronic structure and physical properties.
The whole Frick community turned out to support Leslie Schoop for her Friday lecture, “The Chemistry of Quantum Materials.” As Dept Chair Greg Scholes said, “What she’s done since she’s been
@PrincetonChem
is nothing short of extraordinary.”

I’m really proud of this one. We managed to discover a brand new Dirac semimetal candidate! Wouldn’t have been able to do it without help from
@Gvamvim
@SchoopLab
@argonne
and many others. Check it out!
🏅 This past Friday, SMS celebrate the achievements of our graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff! An afternoon filled with recognition for our remarkable community's achievements! 🌟

This is probably my favorite paper from my PhD. We report two new Dirac semimetal candidates with re-entrant structural modulation. The supercell appears and then disappears again as you change temperature! Check it out.
No manuscript in preparation should ever have a specified journal on a CV. It always feels desperate and puts the importance of the journal over the work itself.
It's the third CV I read today which mentions "manuscript in preparation for Nature"...getting an allergic rash. Is there really such a pressure for overselling work? A link to an actual paper on bioRxiv would have impressed me much more.
I think
@PatsPints
has shared his channel before on here, but I want to plug it again. I can’t recommend this enough as a practical resource for Solid State Chemistry knowledge. I’ve been showing it to my students and watch videos whenever I’m rusty.
When I was interviewing for faculty jobs, I'd ask more-established PIs "Is there anything about being a prof that surprised you?" I'd get a lot of answers about how time consuming teaching and grant writing were, but I realized I'd never asked myself this question.🧵
It’s finally out! My first publication with
@SchoopLab
is online in
@TrendsChemistry
(and my first review article). In this one, Leslie and I talk about chemical bonding in topological materials, and how chemical intuition could play a role. Check it out!
I finally get to say this:
Come be my colleague! ASU is seeking an assistant or associate professor in quantum molecular science. Information in the link below:
One of the nice things about being home is eating more Lebanese food. I would eat munooshi for breakfast all the time as a kid, and it wasn’t until I was older that I realized it wasn’t common 😂
The great thing about being a solid state chemist is that Vesta is free 😃. Diamond and Mercury have their benefits but I wouldn’t pay for them if I didn’t have to. Same with CrystalMaker.
The Khoury Lab will focus on quasi-low dimensional quantum materials, in particular intermetallics and subvalent compounds. We want to work at the intersection of synthetic solid state chemistry and condensed matter physics to understand electron correlations

@OpenAcademics
I cold emailed a new PI telling her that I liked her review article. She’s now my postdoc advisor. It can really make someone’s day if you show appreciation for their work!
My PhD advisor’s (
@MercouriK
) most cited paper is in
@InorgChem
. The next closest paper is almost 1000 citations away. You never know where a paper might take off!
The possibility of my thesis defense going virtual was a bummer at first, but looking at the positives, I could invite plenty of people that never would’ve been able to go otherwise.
We had a tour of our forthcoming high pressure faculty FORCE
@FORCEhighP
today! This is a picture of Ichiban, a large volume press currently under construction.
Just accepted in ZAAC is more of my work with
@SchoopLab
on hypervalent Bi chain compounds. We report five new ones and study their structure and bonding. This was an invited article for my PhD advisor
@MercouriK
’s 65th birthday. Happy birthday Mercouri!
For anyone interested in how to separate metal fluxes from grown single crystals, this is one of the best articles I’ve read going into every possible option.
The application for our chemistry PhD program is open! Please consider applying to do materials research with us in the Navrotsky-Eyring Center for Materials of the Universe.
ASU has a long history of solid state chemistry and I’m excited to be a part of it. I have so many to thank, but my past mentors
@MercouriK
and
@PatsPints
along with my postdoc advisor
@SchoopLab
have been so important to help me get to this point.
I remember asking about the possibility of relocation money when I started my postdoc, and the HR at Princeton told me they can only do that for new faculty members. If we want to be serious about being inclusive as scientists, this absolutely has to change.
Been thinking a lot about the postdoc hiring crisis & IMHO: academia needs to start covering moving costs. It costs 🏦 to move to a new state and most just cannot afford it. The traditional culture of "be grateful for the training opportunity & pay the price" needs to go. 1/3
Some of my closest friends are people I met in grad school. my friends outside academia said that it was harder to meet people in regular workplaces without a cohort of similarly aged folks. This just isn’t true.
@AriHunter_
One of the sad things I discovered applying for jobs this cycle is that a lot of universities make their DEI statements optional or don’t ask for one at all. It’s hard to find links to campus initiatives at most unis too. There’s a long way to go.
Making the news!
@ChemistryWorld
's latest article on 'rare subvalent compound sits on the fence between semiconductors and intermetallics'
Read it here 👉
In terms of takeaways, I realized how arbitrary the process is. There are so many factors outside of the applicants control, and a uni can hire or not hire a person for any reason unbeknownst to them. Being a strong candidate gives you an opportunity, but the interview decides it
What makes a meeting with your group *Group Meeting*? It's something that sounds simple but I've thought about a lot over the years, and I'll expand more on it here. 🧵
@Chemjobber
I feel like these reports don’t emphasize enough that all of these vaccines have been 100% effective at preventing severe COVID cases that lead to hospitalization and how important that is.
@drstarbird
The most upsetting thing is that so many universities have set their stipend pay based on the NIH min. At least they do for postdocs. Some are starting to raise salary to accommodate cost of living but not nearly enough.
@RossLabUC
I’m teaching a course on peer review this semester, and we just went through the hypothetical “what if a reviewer asks for an extremely time consuming/expensive/difficult experiment?” Since I assured them it happens more than you’d think.
