I've been asked to do this before & I'll be honest, I feel like an imposter but here it goes. Ashley's tips on writing an NIH grant (thread) 1. The 1st and most obvious tip is to pick something that you are excited about. Trust me, the reviewers can tell if you aren't excited.

@SusannaLHarris This is mainly just a pet-peeve and I recognize that "organic" means different things to different people but as a chemist, an organic compound is a compound that contains carbons so all your freaking food is organic. 🤣

Every ~6 mon I ask my lab to update their paper outlines. They start outlines at the beginning of the proj. It's a fluid document & changes as the proj progresses but I see this exercise VERY useful for helping them be forward-thinking & organized. I also love reading them💙

Please excuse me while I vent but let me give some advice: If you are applying for a post-doc position in my lab then (1) don't address me as Sir, (2) Read my lab website and don't tell me you'll be a great fit b/c XYZ which has nothing to do with my lab, and (3) harass me.

I care a lot about students. A lot. But at some point I (and you) have to make sure that I’m (you’re) ok too. If you pour everything into other people but nothing into yourself you’ll burn out quick. I think faculty mental health is something that we don’t talk about enough.

Why don’t universities have play areas on campus for parents that are either students, staff, or faculty? A small playground or small indoor play space would be great for days when you have to have your kids with you. Seems like a simple thing to do to be parent inclusive 🤷‍♀️
