WHAT is going on? Is THIS what a cease fire looks like? It's difficult to believe that the Israelis want peace. It looks like what they really want is to expand their borders.

Feb 1943. Henry Marad sent a postcard home. He had been away just short while. I'm guessing he was homesick. No texting back then. No email. And long-distance telephone calls were expensive and the wait to use the phone could be hours long.

Men assume Pride & Prejudice is a Hallmark romance when the plot is driven by the Bennet sisters’ fear of starvation because they will be homeless when their father dies. It’s a book about money, about people, and those who dismiss it as saccharine fluff are cheating themselves.

OTD in 1881, the most significant happening in English literature occurred. The birth of that good egg, Pelham Grenville ('Plum' to his friends) Wodehouse. Knighted in 1975, the novels of this Dulwich-educated master of comic storytelling are compulsory & addictive reading.

Pick up a random newspaper from 1920 and you’ll think you’re reading Cicero. The vocabulary, rhythm, and depth were worlds above what passes for “educated” speech today. We’ve become a civilization that can code, but can’t write a sentence worth remembering.

Shame. Shame on Israel for allowing these settlers to terrorize the residents of the West Bank. You've already displaced them from homes that were in the land granted to you in 1948. What more do you want?

hat ever possessed me to buy this book? I thought it would be inspiring! It turned out to be depressing. Just think, if you live to be 100 and go on 10 trips a year...a guess it's possible. If you don't run out of money...and energy...and vacation time first.

Today in 1066, William the Duke of Normandy crushes England's King Harold II a few miles inland from the coastal village of Hastings (at the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex). Although fewer than 20,000 take part in the clash, its outcome echoes down through the ages.
