I think distributive justice is a relatively underexamined topic in the ethics of AI in healthcare literature, but it’s really important! Hopefully this paper can be useful for ML engineers and healthcare workers, as well as bioethicists, in thinking through some of these issues.

The paper considers the relationship between ML in healthcare and distributive justice with a focus on four aspects of algorithmic design and deployment: the choice of target variable, the model's socio-technical context, the choice of input variables, and dataset membership.
