Paddle Steamers at Night, Eric Ravilious, 1938. It depicts ships of the P & A Campbell line at #Bristol Quay, some of which were used at #Dunkirk as ‘Little Ships’ in 1940 during #WW2. The original artwork is in the collection of @MercerGallery.

Eric Ravilious was killed #OTD in 1942 when the aircraft he was in during a search & rescue mission off Iceland failed to return. From the countryside to war, his depiction of Britain in the 30s & early years of #WW2 remain an incredible legacy, over eighty years after his death.
