Thrilled my paper with @namalhotra is out at @apsrjournal! Have you always been captivated by the impacts of trade policy on political behavior, applications of causal machine learning, and shocks to soybean prices? Ok well regardless this is still the paper for you! A thread 🧵.
Just published on APSR First View: “Policy Impact and Voter Mobilization: Evidence from Farmers’ Trade War Experiences”, by Jake Alton Jares and Neil Malhotra.

As a resident of Menlo Park, I'm trying to come up with a sarcastic "But we have such amazing X here" retort but I've racked my brain for 5 minutes and I can't come up with anything. Like there's a duck pond and a neighborhood theater that only shows cover bands?.
wouldn’t wanna destroy the neighborhood character of the most expensive and boring suburb on earth.

Utterly wild fraud case. Econ finally has its LaCour / Gino / Ariely / Stapel moment . I can almost understand why one could expect to get away w/ this in 2012, before replication was in vogue. But it's 2025! How was this going to come out in the QJE without ppl catching on?.
Update on this paper from last year on AI in scientific discovery. MIT put out a press release:. "no confidence in the provenance, reliability or validity of the data. [or] veracity of the research.". "The author is no longer at MIT.".

I wrote my dissertation on this puzzle. It’s even more surprising/stark than it first seems, and almost none of the answers in reply to this post hold water. Ag policy suggests that economic clout can be overrated for understanding US political influence.
1.2% of Americans and 3.8% of Europeans work in agriculture but farmers still have massive influence in politics.
