I wonder if cleaning staff at universities having in-person classes are being compensated fairly for the excessive work that they’re going to be asked to do to keep things sanitary.
I'm excited to announce that, effective June 1st, I will be resigning from being an Overachieving Black Woman. I can't wait to see where this new endeavor to Do Less takes me! ❤🙌🏾
My cousin wants to go into biomedical science & asked me to teach him some basics. Another cousin wants to be an engineer & wants me to help him with his college apps.
Before me, no one in my family was into science. This is why I’m here. This is why I’m doing this. 😭🙌🏾
Pay grad students more and pay them on time. Stop protecting shitty PIs with tenure. Stop tenuring PIs with no interpersonal communication skills. Pay for conferences/other educational related travel up front. Just a few suggestions. 😊😒
PhD & master’s students report rates of depression & anxiety that are six times higher than those in the general public. (). What could institutions and workplaces do to better support those who are affected?

Full circle moment: Vanderbilt was my dream school for undergrad but I saw the out of state tuition cost and didn't even apply.
I applied there for grad school and got waitlisted (and later accepted days after I took my UAB offer).
Yesterday, I started as a postdoc at VUMC.

I’m Jazmine, 4th year PhD student in Biomed Sciences at UAB.
I’m studying diabetic nephropathy and getting my PhD based on spite and spite alone. I’m also into

Did someone say

Can’t believe I forgot about this one:
I took two weeks off to visit my family one December. When I returned, a lab mate asked me if I “went back to Botswana” for the holidays.
I’m from Georgia, USA.
#BlackintheIvory
Imma just go ahead and keep it 2 Virgils with y’all: I left my thesis lab last week and I’m not okay. Looking back on it, what happened was unacceptable, I handled it entirely too well, and I’m now considering taking my talents into another field of study.
The comments on this post alone demonstrate that there’s a lot of work to be done in science and academia. I hope this is the start of a series of actions and conversations and not just giving into what’s trending right now.
On June 10, Nature will be joining

. We will be educating ourselves and defining actions we can take to help eradicate anti-Black racism in academia and STEM . Please join us.
I got pushed out of a lab for being depressed and concerned about Black people dying. I was told my less than chipper attitude was ruining the lab vibe. And that’s just my story, not even things from others that I’ve heard about. Don’t talk to me about academia.
I am absolutely ECSTATIC to announce that upon earning my PhD in June…
I will start my new role as an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota Medical School‼️ ❤️💛

I’m a year 4 PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at UABirmingham where I focus on sodium independent mechanisms of blood pressure control. My policy interests are disparities in STEM education and healthcare. Shooting my shot at

Family of a Black woman whose cervical cancer cells were taken without consent for research in 1951 are suing a biotech firm for compensation.
Henrietta Lacks died in a Johns Hopkins "colored ward."
Her cells were used to develop HIV meds plus HPV, polio and COVID-19 vaccines.
To everyone asking: I was invited to come in and get my vaccine. I did not sign up or ask. Please don’t be upset with me about inequalities in a system that I did not create.
Hey y’all. 👋🏾 I’m Jazmine, a proud part of the powerhouse that is

I’m a cell and molecular biologist who focuses on cell signaling in diabetes. I've worked with everything from cancer to plants. I plan to go into policy to reform K-12 STEM Ed across the country.
I mean, imma get this degree to make my ancestors and my mama proud and to flex on those that made it difficult for me. I’m just up to my ears in my feelings right now. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Refreshments are in your fridge.
I am delighted to announce that I will be defending my doctoral dissertation on Sept 18th @ 2PM CDT. I'm excited to share the work that I've been doing for the past few years with you all. If you'd like to attend virtually, please reach out to me for the Zoom link.
I know that my place in science is important, but the underlying politics and extra BS of academia are exhausting, and I’m just a grad student. I shutter when I imagine what this time would be like if I were faculty.
Guess what, y’all.
I have data for lab meeting(!!!!!). After being in a place where I was repeatedly doing failing experiments, this is huge for me. I almost shed a tear when the PDF popped up with my figures in it.
My beautiful best friend DOCTOR
@SadeWill93
successfully defended her dissertation yesterday! Please send her lots of love and congratulations. ❤️ 🙌🏾

I’m grappling with the nuances of being

Today we get to watch universities who were completely silent as white supremacy attempted to dismantle democracy two weeks ago send out

emails and social media posts.
Chadwick was 39 when diagnosed. Incident rates are 24% higher in Black men & 19% higher in Black women. The screening age is suggested at 45. Black people, BLACK MEN especially we have to keep up with physicals & get screened early.

👋🏾 I'm Jazmine. I’m a PhD student in Cell, Molecular, and Dev Bio at the Univ of AL at Birmingham. I research cell signaling in diabetes. I’m also heavily into outreach. I’m the only scientist in my family so far. Follow me for all things science with a side of dog pics!
Per Vet’s suggestion: Got Lil Bebe a happy hoodie to help with some of her anxiety about thunderstorms, groomer, etc. I have been in doubled over and in tears for ten minutes.
Once we get another black girl in MY LAB???? It’s over. BFFLs. Laughing in lab meeting because we just looked at each other. Going for mimosas/margaritas at 11am on a Friday.
Okay, y'all. Need some help. Any Black women who go to/went to an Ivy League University for a STEM degree, please comment or DM. My student is looking to make some connections and possibly interview you for her project! Please RT

Full circle moment: A student from the high school I went to wants me to be her mentor for her senior project. The topic is the lack of Women of Color in STEM.
She doesn't know it, but this is OUR senior project now.
Finally broke 1k, so it’s probably time for another introduction. I’m Jazmine 👋🏾, 3rd year PhD student at UABirmingham. I research cell signaling mechanisms in diabetes and I’m passionate about science policy/advocacy/outreach. 👩🏾🔬 Here’s one of the ❤️s of my life, Cersei. 🐾
Pros of having older Ph.D. student friends: Experienced, knowledgeable, can tell you which faculty to avoid
Cons of having older Ph.D. student friends: They defend before you do

IT’S MY BEST BUDDY’S BIRTHDAY TODAY! 🎉🥰 Would you believe that this sweet baby ball of fluff is (maybe) 8-10 years old? Best first dog and rash grad school decision ever. We’ll be running in wet grass and eating steaks all day today.
I have a FINAL EXAM today. It’s 8 long answer questions.
Our university system won’t allow Election Day to be a holiday because it would be a “democratic move”. Think about that.

I REPEAT!!! MY MF DATA LINES UP WITH WHAT TF I EXPECTED!
Sharing my excitement here before someone rightfully points out something that suggests the exact opposite. 🙃
Cersei and I* are crossing the stage on Friday, December 8th at 10am CST.
For anyone who would like to watch but cannot be there in person, it will be live-streamed on the UAB Facebook and YouTube pages.
I forgot to tell y’all: I found a new lab!!! My (new) research is related to the role of feeding behavior on risk factors for diabetic nephropathy. I haven’t been this excited about science since last August.
BREAKING: Gov. Kemp announces that businesses like gyms, salons, nail salons, bowling alleys and more can reopen for baseline operations on Friday. WATCH LIVE:
I felt physically fantastic, but nothing could have prepared me for how mentally difficult this was. I’m drinking a coke in my bathtub and immediately going to bed. 2/10 will do again in February.
