Companies that size usually have a board and investors with governance and codes of conduct. They’re VC backed. CEO isn’t all powerful like they would be at a smaller business.

I say all this to say, beware of people who cannot or will not admit the limits of their knowledge. And also do your level best not to be one of those people. It can have dangerous and adverse consequences for people for what boils down to nothing more than ego.

An oncologist is an M.D who specializes in cancer, but may defer to another oncologist who specializes in a specific type of cancer. Often being a professional means being fluent in your own vertical and being conversant in the supporting disciplines around it.

Someone can be well trained and educated in a particular vertical or discipline that exists within a broader tent, but the cone of competence that covers will still be limited. Example: Primary Care Physician is an M.D, but they will defer to an oncologist for cancer.

A note on expertise. I believe a critical marker of competence is recognizing your own limitations and being prudent not to misrepresent the depth or breadth of your knowledge.
