It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

Diplomacy with Russia isn’t working because so far it’s been built on a wrong understanding of Putin’s key objectives. He doesn’t want peace, but to achieve his goals in Ukraine. If America can help with that, he’ll take it. If not, he’s ready to keep fighting.

Some brief thoughts on the recent Witkoff–Ushakov–Dmitriev leaks and the broader state of the peace talks. 1. Moscow faces a serious structural problem: whom should it actually talk to on the American side? - Steve Witkoff is convenient and receptive to Russian ideas, but

President Vladimir Putin proposed an extension to New START—a nuclear arms treaty that limits the size of U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. "An unverifiable, 1-year extension is not a substitute for peace in Europe," write John Drennan and Erin Dumbacher.

The United States should not fall for Putin’s gambit to undercut Ukraine. Before agreeing to an extension, it must secure greater verification guarantees and a commitment to further negotiations.

Yet the proposal pushed upon Ukraine from the Trump administration in its current form is one that so closely resembles the Kremlin’s maximalist demands that senior Ukrainian officials briefed on it called it a Putin wishlist and said it would essentially amount to Ukraine giving

Ending a complex and deadly war such as the one in Ukraine requires an extensive exchange of serious and realistic ideas. And achieving a durable peace will require both sides to agree to difficult but necessary concessions. That is why we are and will continue to develop a list

Ukraine’s forces launched a massive drone attack on airfields deep inside Russia that were home to strategic bombers used in air raids, in possibly their most audacious attack of the war. “More than 40 aircraft have been hit,” an official told @FT.

What does a cabinet reshuffle in Russia mean for 🇨🇳🇷🇺 government-to-government ties? It's about continuity, deepening, and long-term. Also, as Beijing and Moscow expand their defense industrial cooperation, Putin has elevated high-caliber professionals with China experience. 🧵

Economist Andrey Belousov appointed on a MoD. What does it say? A quick🧵 - Putin's priority is war; war of attrition is won by economics. Belousov is in favor of stimulating demand from the budget, which means that military spending will at least not decrease but rather increase

We've done research on Russian coercive signaling, which today's MQ-9/SU-27 incident was. It's a close pass that went bad. There are patterns of how Russian platforms intercept U.S. or NATO platforms operating near Russia but in international airspace/waters. Context below.

Among other takeaways, the tank saga has been a good reminder that NATO is also a political alliance - in this case alliance management concerns over issues like "unity" seem to have trumped any questions about military utility or feasibility https://t.co/hqQcodKxjw
