Such bizarre behaviour for a mayor. Cooperating in the prisoners dilemma when the other councils are guaranteed to defect.

Mauger again says Chch got plenty of money after the earthquakes and was ok with govt taking back $78m for PT. And apparently with them taking all the other money that was allocated for Chch & Canterbury as well. Reminder, Canterbury is consistently under funded in the NLTF

And if you use CEP (civil construction price inflation) instead of CPI, lowest in the series*. Drivers contribute less asphalt / gravel / bridge maintenance etc, now than at any point since at least 2004 (*temporary silly Lab post Covid cuts aside)

Ok here it is actually adjusted for CPI. We aren’t at the lowest point in the last 20 years, but close. NZ fuel tax (FED) in 2025 dollars.

Electricity costs really have been skyrocketing. Energy abundance is the only path out of this mess.

On another note, my electricity bill is crazy right now. It has, in the last 3 months, gone up by 20-30 percent. It is shocking.

Also is what gives me the shits about abolishing councils @AbsentHog, expanding this dynamic to all infra would be diabolical.

Really sucks this is so heavily incentivised, I think, by the national fuel tax system. There are huge rewards to councils and MPs to bellow for more and more. No rewards for user pays or good pricing generally, and no room for good projects generally.

More than 80 % of participants in my poll last week on Mailchimp and social media don’t support tolls for the new Woodend Bypass. ❌ ❌

Our existing standards are embarrassingly out of date. We will be the last “developed” nation in the world to move on from the Euro 5 standard.

Good News for Euro 6 Earlier this year the government signed a Land Transport Rule amendment to require all imported vehicles meet the newer Euro 6d toxic emissions standards by 2028

Fuel taxes basically unchanged in real terms since the mid 2000s. And that’s before you consider the average vehicle efficiency has improved a lot.

Roads must be cheaper to build and maintain now. Or maybe we are picking better projects.

Today the Monetary Policy Committee voted to lower the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 25 basis points to 3%. Inflation is currently around the top of our 1-3% target band, but is expected to return to around 2% by mid-2026. If medium-term inflation pressures continue to ease as
